James L. Connolly 1935-2026

James L. Connolly

POLAND – James L. “Jim” Connolly, 91, passed away Thursday, March 5, 2026, following a brief illness.

Jim was born Jan. 28, 1935, to John and Edith Connolly.

As a youth, Jim excelled at sports, notably basketball, where he played for South High School. He and his wife Peggy created many lifelong friendships at South High and enjoyed their annual reunions for over 67 years.

After graduating from South High School, Jim attended Youngstown State University, earning a B.S. in Education in 1958.

Jim paid his way through school by working as a timekeeper at Younstown Sheet and Tube and at Mill Creek Park as a patrol officer. Immediately following graduation, he completed his Army National Guard requirements at Fort Knox in Kentucky and Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas.

Jim was thrilled when Peggy Potts said yes to his invitation to a YSU dance their sophomore year. They were married at Pleasant Grove Presbyterian Church in Youngstown on Dec. 20, 1958. Jim was a devoted husband for nearly 64 years until Peggy’s death in 2022. His heart treasured her love and their memories daily since her passing.

Jim began his career in education for the Youngstown City Schools at Kirkmere Elementary. While there, he completed his master’s degree in school administration at Westminster College. Jim’s natural ability as a leader and administrator was apparent during his initial years as a principal for the Youngstown City Schools.

He transferred his talents to the Poland School District in 1970, remaining there until his retirement in 1994. The friendships he shared with the teachers and staff there blessed Jim and his family greatly to the present day. Following retirement, Jim served as an adjunct professor for YSU and as an assistant principal in Streetsboro.

Jim was a true servant leader in the church, community and with friends. He spent immeasurable hours of his life serving and sharing fellowship with the church families of Pleasant Grove and Westminster Presbyterian. Whether leading as an elder, on various committees or on clean-up duty, his hard work got the job done. His steadfast faith was evident in his actions, his friendships and his assurance in his Savior’s love.

The far-reaching impact he had on the community was evident. Throughout the years, his family would remark how “everywhere” they went, someone always recognized and thanked “Mr. C.” for all he did for them as their principal, co-worker or friend.

Jim was first and foremost devoted to his family, and they loved him beyond measure. The love and support he and Peggy gave to their children and grandchildren enriched their lives and created a legacy they will continue to uphold.

To lovingly treasure his memory, he leaves his three children, Patricia (Lou) Antonelli of Westlake, Jim Connolly of Canfield and Marcie (Mark) Niemi of Akron; grandchildren, Erin (Danny) Lyman, Seth Niemi, Mark (Miya) Antonelli, Abbey Niemi, Joel Niemi and Ethan Niemi; three great-grandchildren; brother-in-law Jim Potts, many nieces and nephews, and treasured friends and dear neighbors.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Clyde and Jack, and his beloved wife, Peggy.

Calling hours will be 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. Friday, March 13, 2026, at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Boardman, with a memorial service to follow at 2 p.m. All are welcome to join the family for light refreshments following the service in the fellowship hall at the church.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his memory to the Westminster Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund, 119 Stadium Drive, Boardman, OH 44512.

Arrangements are by the Davis-Becker Funeral Home in Boardman.
