Thomas J. Kane 1946-2026

Thomas, born June 9, 1946, was the beloved son of John and Mary Little Kane. Raised with strong values of faith, responsibility and service, Tom carried those foundations with him throughout his life.

Tom was a proud graduate of Cardinal Mooney High School, Class of 1964, and went on to earn his degree from Youngstown State University in 1969 — an institution that would remain central to his professional life and identity for decades to come.

On Dec. 13, 1969, Tom married the love of his life, Waldene Burnett. Their marriage was one of deep commitment, shared faith and steady companionship. Together they built a life grounded in mutual respect, loyalty and love – expressed not through grand gestures, but through everyday devotion and care.

Tom dedicated his professional career to Youngstown State University, where he served with integrity and quiet leadership. He retired as Executive Director of Payroll, Fringe Benefits and Labor Relations, a role that reflected both his deep knowledge and his calm, fair-minded approach to people and responsibility. He was widely respected for his professionalism, consistency and unwavering sense of ethics. In recognition of his lasting contributions, Tom was the recipient of the Youngstown State University Heritage Award, as well as several Distinguished Service Awards.

A lifelong Catholic, Tom was a devoted member of St. Charles Church, where his faith was nurtured and lived out over many years. His faith was a guiding presence in his life — expressed through kindness, honesty and compassion — and sustained him in both joyful seasons and difficult moments. He trusted deeply in God’s providence and mercy and sought to live those values in his daily interactions with others.

In retirement, Tom embraced life fully. He enjoyed traveling with Waldene and many friends, especially to sunny destinations and on numerous cruises. He loved golf and treasured the friendships it brought — golfing regularly with Waldene and several couples, as well as twice each week with “the guys.” Time spent on the course was as much about companionship as it was about the game.

Tom also valued connection in everyday ways. He enjoyed meeting friends for breakfasts, lunches, and dinners, and he took great pride in caring for his park-like yard. Each summer, he and Waldene generously shared their home and yard with family and friends, hosting large weekend picnics filled with laughter, conversation, and a genuine sense of welcome.

Tom was a devoted husband, a loyal friend and a steady presence to many. He did not seek attention, but his presence was deeply felt. Those who knew him well knew they could rely on him – for counsel, support, quiet understanding or, of course, always a good laugh.

Tom is lovingly remembered by his wife, Waldene; his sister, Mary Ann Brown; his brothers-in-law, Bob Burnett and Dick Burnett; sister-in-law, Darlene Kolb; his longtime friend and “little brother,” Tom Bodnovich; and his many nieces and nephews. He is also remembered by the many family members, friends, colleagues and neighbors whose lives he touched.

He was predeceased by his parents; his brothers-in-law, Steve Brown and Jim Kolb; and sister-in-law, Sue Burnett. His legacy is one of faithfulness, integrity, generosity and love lived quietly and consistently.

Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 22, 2026, at the Davis-Becker Funeral Home, 8536 Market St., Boardman, OH 44512.

A memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 23, 2026, at St. Catherine of Sienna at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Parish, 7345 Westview Drive, Boardman, OH 44512.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Mercy Health Hospice of the Valley – Hospice House, or to Beatitude House of Youngstown.

The family asks for prayers for Tom and for all who mourn his passing. May he rest in the peace of Christ, whom he served with trust and humility throughout his life.
