Mary C. Douglas 1938-2025

GIRARD — Mary Catherine Douglas, known to her friends and family for most of her life as Mae, passed away Monday, Sept. 15, 2025, at Shepherd of the Valley in Girard after a 14-month struggle both with her memory and health.

Mae was born Jan. 29, 1938, and grew up with her parents, Francis and Mary Simpson Charles, six brothers and sisters, and often, extended family on Second Street in Girard.

She and her family attended St. Rose Parish, where she was married to Andrew “Bud” Douglas in 1959. They dated throughout high school, often attending local sock hops.

After marriage, she and Bud moved to Newark, where their first child, a son, was born. Soon, they moved back to Girard, where two more children, both daughters, were born. They remained in Girard until the children were school age, then moved to Akron for a short time and later to Steubenville, where Mae worked as an accountant. Once the children were out of school, Mae and Bud moved to Austintown, where they lived for many years.

She worked first for Schwebel Baking Co. as an accountant and then, after many years, Elias CPA Group of Mahoning County, where she did both accounting and taxes. Retiring at 70, she relocated to Fredericksburg, Virginia, to be closer to her son and his family, where she continued doing taxes for friends, family and businesses well into her 80s.

In addition to helping others with their taxes, Mae enjoyed playing cards with her friends at Summerlake in Fredericksburg. She and her husband enjoyed family gatherings, cooking and baking, football and baseball, and reading. Throughout her life, Mae read Harlequin romances by the dozen, often returning them to the library or used bookstore after only a few days. She and Bud also enjoyed their cats and travel, particularly to the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

Mae leaves to cherish her memory, her children, Frank (Barbara) Douglas, Mary Joyce Douglas and Judy (Doug) Love; grandchildren, Melissa Rigby, Heather Rigby, Robert (Lauren) Tullio and Andrew Douglas and his fiancee, Rebecca Hederer; great-grandchildren, Robert James Tullio, Jeffrey Douglas Tullio and Cyrus Love Tullio; siblings, Bill (Jane) Charles, Carolyn (Don) Kelly and Betty Kravec; sister-in-law, Mary Charles; and an extensive family of nieces, nephews and their families.

Besides her parents, Mae was preceded in death by her husband, who died in March 2024 after 65 years of marriage; two brothers, Bob Charles and John Charles; and a sister, Patricia Kennedy.

A memorial service for Mae will be 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 6, 2025, at Blackstone Funeral Home in Girard.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any material contributions be made to Shepherd of the Valley Foundation (www.shepherdofthevalley.com/foundation), to honor those who cared for Mae so well during the last 14 months of her life; Akeso Hospice (6600 Summit Drive, Canfield, OH 44406), to honor those who assisted during her final weeks, days and hours; and Angels for Animals (www.angelsforanimals.org), because of her love for her pets.
