Joseph D. Smith 1935-2025

YOUNGSTOWN — Joseph D. Smith passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2025, at the age of 90.

Born April 18, 1935, in Youngstown, a son of the late Victor J. and Mary Williams Smith, Joe was a proud graduate of Ursuline High School. After high school, he worked at the family business of Smith Brake and Sons.

Joe began his career with Commercial Shearing for 10 years. He continued his working career that spanned 34 years with General Motors Lordstown and started as a line manager. He later took on the responsibility of overseeing outside maintenance.

As a devoted member of the Knights of Columbus, Joe achieved the esteemed rank of 4th Degree Knight. He was a member of Christ Our Savior Parish-St. Nicholas Church, where he was an usher for 18 years. He was an avid fan of Notre Dame, passionately supporting the team through thick and thin. His love for life was evident in the simple pleasures he cherished — whether it was enjoying old cars, listening to music or relaxing on the front porch with a cold drink in hand.

Nothing was more dear to him than spending time with his granddaughters.

Joe is survived by his loving wife, Patricia Hodos Smith, whom he married May 18, 1957; his daughter, Anastasia “Stacey” (Joe Meyers) Wilson of Boardman; his son, Joseph V. Smith of Seffner, Florida; three grandchildren, Candice (Richard) Kridler, Brittany Smith and Crystal Wilson; three great-grandchildren, Cloie Lamoureux, Joseph Lamoureux and Iseah Mathis; and his sister, Charlene Smith of Youngstown.

Joe was preceded in death by his siblings, Victor Smith, Betty Berry, Mary Louise Shea, Susan Fercana, Donna Houser and JoAnn Perry.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 25, 2025, at Christ Our Savior Parish-St. Nicholas Church, following calling hours from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Christ Our Savior Parish-St. Nicholas Church, 770 Fifth St., Struthers, OH 44471.
