William J. Pekkanen Jr. 1946-2025

STRUTHERS — William J. “Corky” Pekkanen Jr., 78, of Struthers, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, July 17, 2025, surrounded by his family after a lengthy battle with health issues.
Born on Oct. 2, 1946, in New Castle, Pa., he was the son of the late William Sr. and Jennie Marttala Pekkanen.
A 1964 graduate of Springfield Local High School, Corky married the love of his life, the former Marilyn Rummel, on Nov. 16, 1965. Together, they shared nearly 60 years of love, laughter and unwavering partnership.
Corky spent numerous years in the steel industry and once he retired, Corky drove bus for Poland and Struthers schools. If he was not driving bus, he was working at the golf course.
A devoted family man, Corky cherished time spent golfing with his sons at the former Fonderlac Country Club, now The Lake Club. He was well known for his famous homemade sauerkraut and the joy he brought to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who lovingly called him “Bappa.”
Above all, Corky was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather and great-grandfather. His kind spirit, strong work ethic and enduring love for his family will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Marilyn; his children, William J. Pekkanen III of Struthers, Kimberly Ann Shetter of Struthers and Richard Lee (Marie) Pekkanen of Boardman; his brother, Ron (Diane) Pekkanen of Poland; grandchildren, Christina (Alan) Bakos, Jennifer Shetter, Kevin Pekkanen, Cory Pekkanen, Joseph (Kristen) Shetter and Ryan Shetter; and his great-grandchildren, A.J., Elizabeth and Zak Bakos, and Bella, Colton and Hunter Shetter; and sister-in-law, Karen Pekkanen of the Villages of Florida.
In addition to his parents, Corky was preceded in death by his brother, Bob Pekkanen; and his son-in-law, Dennis Shetter.
Family and friends may call from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 22, 2025, at Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, 270 N. Main St., Poland, OH 44514.
Burial will follow in Poland Riverside Cemetery.
