Carol J. Queen 1930-2025

GIRARD – Carol Jean Riddle Queen, 94, formerly of Struthers, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at Shepherd of the Valley-Liberty.

Carol was born Oct. 4, 1930, in Youngstown, the daughter of the late Clifford and Elsie Lundberg Nord. A proud graduate of Struthers High School, Class of 1948, she was a lifelong resident of the Mahoning Valley.

Carol dedicated her career to serving the community through her work as a clerk for The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County. Most of her years were spent at the North Branch on Fifth Avenue, later serving at the Boardman and Austintown branches before retiring in 1996. Even after retirement, her commitment continued as a longtime volunteer and member of Friends of the Library.

Born into the congregation of Struthers United Presbyterian Church, now known as Struthers Parkside Church, Carol lived her faith through decades of service. She served as a deacon for 12 years, helped lead the church’s Bicentennial Committee, co-founded the blanket ministry with her dear friend Elaine Karnes, and was active as a small group leader and Sunday school teacher.

Carol also shared a love of classic automobiles with her late husband, Dale Queen, as active members of the Mahoning Valley Olde Car Club. Together, they generously volunteered in nearly every capacity the club required. She was also a dedicated member and table host of the Youngstown South Christian Women’s Connection for over 30 years. She was a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow, recognized by Struthers Rotary for service to others.

Affectionately known as the “Mom on Elm Street,” Carol welcomed generations of neighborhood children from Lyon Plat School from the 1950s through the 1970s. Carol made an innumerable number of people smile with her baking skills and the sweet treats she created. She always made sure her loved ones had a homemade dessert on their birthdays and special occasions.

Carol is survived by her four children, Arthur “Butch” (Paula) Riddle, Kenneth (Debbie Jo) Riddle, both of Louisville, Kentucky, Gregg (Carol) Riddle of Poland and Julie Winningham of Boardman; a sister, Wilda Peterson of Macedonia; 11 grandchildren, Joseph Riddle, Amanda (Andrew) Boreing, Cassandra Riddle, Lance (Evie) Riddle, Kendall (Connor) Evanoff, Alexander Riddle, Scott (Courteney) Riddle, Ann (Nick) Huggins, Danielle Winningham, Rachel Winningham and Kadie Queen; seven great-grandchildren; and four stepchildren, Daleen Madden of Tampa, Florida, Darrin (Jean) Queen of Grayson, Georgia, Diane (Richard) Pajot of Tampa, Florida, and Douglas (Tami) Queen of Pensacola, Florida.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved husbands: Robert “Bob” Frederick Riddle, whom she married Aug. 28, 1950, and who passed Nov. 5, 1975; and Dale Charles Queen, whom she married Aug. 13, 1982, and who passed April 30, 2012.

Family and friends may call 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 1, 2025, and 10 to 10:45 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, 2025, at Davis-Becker Funeral Home, 8536 Market Street in Boardman. A funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home, officiated by Pastor Brett Householder.

Interment will take place in Lake Park Cemetery in Youngstown.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Children’s Fund of the Mahoning Valley Olde Car Club, in Carol’s memory.
