Anna L. Ponigar 1925-2025

STRUTHERS — Anna Benny Ponigar, 99, passed away peacefully, Thursday, July 10, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, tradition and unwavering devotion to her family and faith.

Born Oct. 27, 1925, in Youngstown, Anna was the daughter of the late John and Anna Mudri Benny. She graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1943 and became a lifelong resident of the Mahoning Valley, settling in Struthers in 1951.

A devoted member of Christ Our Savior Parish-St. Nicholas Church, Anna was actively involved in the parish community. She was a proud member of the Infant Jesus of Prague Guild and the Altar and Rosary Society, where her faith and dedication shone brightly.

Anna was a beloved homemaker who loved gathering with her family for special occasions, creating cherished memories.

She is survived by her two sons, James A. (Doreen) Ponigar of Poland and John W. (Cheryl) Ponigar of Fort Myers, Florida; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, all of whom were a source of immense pride and joy.

Anna was preceded in death by her loving husband of 57 years, Alvin Francis Ponigar, whom she married June 24, 1944, and who died Sept. 21, 2001; her daughter, Carol A. Ponigar; two sisters, Lillian Kukura and Agnes Hunter; and her brother, Robert Benny.

The Ponigar family would like to extend a special thank you to the entire staff at Hampton Woods and Sanctuary Hospice for all the love and compassion shown to their mother.

Private services were held Friday, July 18, 2025, at Christ Our Savior Parish-St. Nicholas Church in Struthers, with Fr. Thomas Kraszewski officiating. Anna was laid to rest beside her husband and daughter in St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery in Lowellville.
