William J. Schrieber 1930-2025

CAMPBELL — William J. “Gus” Schrieber, 94, passed away at home surrounded by his loving family Monday, June 9, 2025.
Gus was born Nov. 23, 1930, in Campbell, a son of John and Mary Krajnak Schrieber.
He was a 1949 graduate of Campbell Memorial High School, and Campbell was always his home. Gus served in the U.S. Army from Nov. 26, 1951, until Nov. 6, 1953. He served his country for 18 months in Germany.
Gus married the love of his life, the former Dolores J. Yarab, on April 14, 1956, and they shared 69 years of marriage until her passing on April 26, 2025.
Gus worked as a package and freight truck driver for Anderson Suburban Delivery. He then drove the senior citizen bus for the city of Campbell until his retirement in 1992.
He was of the Catholic faith and a member of Christ the Good Shepherd Parish in Campbell after the closing of St. Elizabeth Church, his home parish. He was also a member of the American Legion, Jednota.
Gus was an avid baseball player, having played in the Army, and became semi-pro as a pitcher for the New York Giants’ farm system. He was inducted into the Campbell Memorial Hall of Fame in 1996, and then the Old Timers Hall of Fame later on. During his baseball career, he had the opportunity to play with Lou Skizas and Ken Boyer, and trained with major leaguers Carl Hubbell, Curt Simmons and Willie Mays.
He was a scratch golfer and legitimate local champion, truly gifted at the game and never missing an opportunity to hit the course.
In his free time, he enjoyed watching the Cleveland Indians and Browns, as well as the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
