Norman Douglas Bobovnik 1946-2025

AUSTINTOWN — Norman Douglas Bobovnik, 78, passed away peacefully on Monday morning, April 21, 2025.

Born Dec. 12, 1946, in Youngstown, Norman was the beloved son of Stephen Michael Bobovnik and Mary Horak. He grew up in a close-knit family alongside his two brothers — older brother, Donald, and younger brother, Stephen.

From a young age, Norman displayed a deep passion for music, gravitating toward the saxophone, an instrument that would become his lifelong companion. A proud graduate of Ursuline High School, Class of 1964, Norman went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in music from Youngstown State University. He began his professional life as a music teacher and performer before transitioning into sales, a move that eventually brought him to Southern California.

Though his career path shifted, Norman never lost touch with his love for music. After settling in California, he rekindled his passion for the saxophone and embraced a new chapter as a professional smooth jazz musician. Over the course of 35 years on the West Coast, Norman recorded and released three jazz CDs, sharing his artistry and soulful sound with the world.

Later in life, due to the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and ongoing health issues, Norman returned to Ohio to be closer to family.

He is survived by his two sons, Jason and Michael, who carry forward his legacy of creativity, resilience and love of music.

Norman will be remembered for his warm spirit, his talent and the music that lived within him. His saxophone may now be silent, but the melodies he created will echo in the hearts of all who knew him.

A private service was held for immediate family at Tod Cemetery, where he was laid to rest.

Vaschak-Kirila Funeral Home handled all of the arrangements for the family.
