Sophie Ann Ceryan 1925-2025
NEW CASTLE, Pa. — Sophie Ann Ceryan passed away on Sunday, March 16, 2025, in New Castle, Pa.
She was born Aug. 12, 1925. She was looking forward to reaching the age of 100, but she didn’t quite make it.
Sophie was a 1943 graduate of East High School in Youngstown, where she lived with her mother and father, Anthony and Anna Hentosh Demidovich, and her six siblings, Helen (William Peacock), Mary (Anthony Verdream), Michael Steven, John and William, all of whom preceded her in death.
She married Joseph George Ceryan on June 14, 1947, and raised four children, JoAnn (Nicholas DiLorenzo), Joyce (Mark Frericks), Joseph (Cerjan) and Janet (Anson Berry), and delighted in subsequent grandchildren (six) and great-grandchildren (eight). She and Joseph were married for 61 years until his passing on April 17, 2008.
Sophie was actively involved in St. Edward’s Catholic Church of Youngstown, golf club, bridge club, card club, world travel and the lives of her descendants. She excelled at cooking, baking, sewing, knitting, crocheting, crafting, reading and playing in the Od Scra (Happy Hearts) Tamburitazn orchestra of Youngstown.
Her family is grateful to Clen-Moore Place of New Castle and Grane Hospice for the gentle, loving care that they gave her as needed.
Wonderful Sophie will never be forgotten. She gave and received much love.
A formal memorial service will be held at a future date.
