Man charged with felonious assault in Sunday altercation
YOUNGSTOWN — Aaron Bertovich, 30, was charged Monday in Youngstown Municipal Court with felonious assault for a fight involving a weapon late Sunday on Bennington Avenue on the East Side.
Court records list the charge, but they do not indicate that Bertovich was arraigned on the charge Monday. He also is not listed as an inmate of the Mahoning County jail. He was taken to the hospital Sunday night.
A Youngstown police report states that officers were called to Bennington Avenue at 11:03 p.m. Sunday for a fight with a weapon. When officers arrived, Bertovich was near the driveway. An officer asked if he had a weapon, and Bertovich tossed a knife beside the driveway. The officer handcuffed Bertovich, who had a bloody face and was bleeding heavily from his nose.
An officer spoke with a woman from the house who said Bertovich broke the side window of the house, and she heard “commotion” in the house. She said her friend owns the house. The officer saw blood near the rear door of the house and in the kitchen, the report states.
The homeowner arrived and told police he had taken Bertovich somewhere to buy drugs and that the drugs and alcohol may have made Bertovich “irate.” He said when he got back to the house with Bertovich, they argued. He went into the house, and Bertovich entered without permission, the report states.
Bertovich eventually left the home and later smashed out a side window of the house and entered the house again. He said Bertovich swung a fixed-blade knife at him in the kitchen. He said after the dispute continued, he and friends struck Bertovich “in self-defense.”
The victim looked at the knife that Bertovich threw to the ground, and he agreed that it was the knife Bertovich had in the house. Bertovich was treated at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital for his injuries. No other injuries were reported. The report did not indicate that officers took Bertovich to jail.
