Michael James Pirko 1950-2024
POLAND — Michael James Pirko, 74, passed away peacefully Sunday morning, Sept. 29, 2024, in the comfort of his home, with his wife and loving family at his bedside.
Michael was born Sept. 28, 1950, in Niles, a son of the late Mike Pirko and Phyllis Adams Pirko. He spent his entire life in the area, graduating from Niles McKinley High School before furthering his education at Youngstown State University, where he earned a master’s degree in business.
Michael had a distinguished career, starting as a general foreman at U.S. Steel McDonald Works. He later worked at GATX Railroad Tank Car Division and Nucor Vulcraft Steel Corp., retiring in 1987. His hard work and leadership were respected by all who had the privilege to work with him.
A devout member of St. Anne Ukrainian Catholic Church in Austintown, Michael lived his faith and embodied kindness, always ready to lend a helping hand. He was passionate about sports, especially his beloved Cleveland Indians and Browns, never missing a game. As a sports board moderator, he took pride in keeping everyone informed of game schedules and results. He also participated in the Fleaflicker Fantasy Sports League, enjoying the camaraderie it brought. In addition to his love for sports, Michael enjoyed watching birds, especially cardinals, which brought him peace and joy.
He leaves behind his loving wife of 43 years, Nancy Balog Pirko, whom he married Nov. 21, 1981; two brothers, Thomas (Jan) Pirko and James Pirko; as well as many cherished extended family members. Michael will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
In addition to his parents, Michael was preceded in death by his brothers, Richard and Charles.
Nancy extends her heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Mercy Home Health, especially nurses Sherri and Andy, along with nurse Jess from Harmony Hospice, for their compassionate care. She would also like to thank Dr. Munir Awad, nurse Lori, and Dr. Reema Taneja for their support and compassionate care throughout the years.
Family and friends may call 1 to 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4, 2024, at Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 N. Meridian Road, Youngstown, where a funeral service will take place at 3 p.m.
