Verna R. Hamm 1939-2024

AUSTINTOWN — Verna R. Hamm, 85, passed away peacefully, Tuesday morning, July 30, 2024, at Austinwoods.

Born on June 24, 1939, in Banning, Pa., Verna was the beloved daughter of the late Elroy and Lola Guth Leighty. After her marriage, she moved to the Youngstown area where she dedicated her life to raising and caring for her family. She later worked in various medical and accounting positions throughout the area, retiring in 2014 from Humility House, at the age of 75.

Verna was a cherished member of Old North Church in Canfield. She had a passion for crocheting beautiful baby blankets, which she generously donated to the Pregnancy Help Center of Youngstown. A voracious reader and an avid traveler, Verna loved visiting family and, most of all, spending quality time with her loved ones.

Verna is survived by her two daughters, Melinda Hamm of Marietta, Georgia, and Denise Harver of Austintown; her son, Brian (Roberta) Hamm of Stephens City, Virginia; three grandchildren, Kollette (Jorge) Carrasco of Hialeah, Florida, Eric Harver of Beaver Falls, Pa., and Ian Harver of Boardman; two great-grandchildren, Kailenn and Sydney Carrasco; her sister, Ardith (James) Blucher of North Port, Florida; her sister-in-law and best friend, Allegra Patterson of Saunderstown, Rhode Island; and many extended family members.

Her husband of 59 years, Clarence E. Hamm, whom she married March 17, 1956, died Dec. 4, 2015.

Two sisters, Shelva Chalker and infant, Rae, also preceded Verna in death.

Private graveside services will be held at a later date in Mount Olivet Cemetery, where Verna will be laid to rest beside her husband.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Kinnick Funeral Home in Youngstown.

Verna’s family would like to extend a very special thank you to the nurses and staff of Woodlands at Austinwoods, for their kindness shown and compassionate care given to Verna over the last few years.

Memorial contributions can be made, in Verna’s memory, to Cure Alzheimer’s Fund, 34 Washington St., Suite 310 Wellesley Hills, MA 02481 or via https://curealz.org/giving/donate/.
