Nicholas ‘Nick’ Ihnat 1936-2024
GIRARD — Nicholas “Nick” Ihnat, 87, passed away peacefully, Saturday, June 22, 2024, surrounded by his family, at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital.
He was born the son of Andrew and Mary Ihnat, on Dec. 17, 1936, in Campbell. He started working at a young age at Trumbell Bakery and graduated in the Class of 1954 from Campbell Memorial High School. He met his future wife Agnes while still in high school in the summer of 1953 and married June 14, 1958. They had three children. Nick continued to work at a bakery employed by Schwebel’s in Youngstown. To spend more time with his family, Nick took an opportunity with Jergens Inc. in the greater Cleveland area and relocated his family in 1972. Nick retired from Jergens Inc. after 34 years, in 2000, from the sales, purchasing and shipping departments. After he retired, he continued to work part-time for American Limousine Service as a funeral home driver.
Nick and his family were members of St. Stephen Byzantine Catholic Church in Euclid. He was an active member of the church’s civics club, held multiple board positions and was an usher with the church. Additionally, Nick was a member of the Knights of Columbus; Euclid Counsel #3164, holding the position of Grand Knight Third-Degree and the 800 Moses Cleveland Assembly holding the position as a Past Faithful Navigator, Fourth-Degree Knight.
Nick was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. His passion for baking paska and kolache was passed to his children and grandchildren to carry on the tradition. Additional hobbies included repairing and restoring old cars with his son, traveling with his wife and taking her to casinos, and visiting and enjoying time with family.
Nick leaves his wife, Agnes Yuhas Ihnat of 66 years; his daughters, Agnes Root (Gregory Mellott) of Harrisonville, Pa., JoAnn Bohonik (Michael) of West Middlesex, Pa., and son, Nicholas Ihnat (Marie DeCapua) of Twinsburg; granddaughter, Caitlyn Ihnat-Dyko (Chris) of Asheville, North Carolina; grandson, Jude Ihnat of Cuyahoga Falls; great-grandson, Logan Avery of West Middlesex; and great-granddaughter, Isabella Agnes of West Middlesex. Nick was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Joseph and his wife, Josephine, Edward, John and Andrew; as well as two infant sisters.
The family would like to thank the Liberty Township police, fire and ambulance departments for their services, and the St. Elizabeth Hospital Emergency Room and ICU for their care and compassion through our difficult time.
