Thomas O. Crump 1932-2024

CHAMPION — Thomas Owen Crump, 91, a longtime resident of Champion, passed away at St. Joseph Warren Hospital on Saturday, May 25, 2024, surrounded by his loving family.

Thomas was born on Aug. 19, 1932, in North Lima, the son of the late Owen and Edna Crump.

He attended North Lima High School and was an excellent baseball and football player. Thomas worked at the Youngstown Steel Door company for more than 30 years.

He was a Korean War veteran, having served from 1953-1955. He received several medals for his service and served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He went on to study business at Youngstown University and graduated with a B.S. in Business Administration in 1964. After retiring from Youngstown Steel Door, Thomas also worked for H&R Block as a tax specialist.

Thomas was a volunteer leader for the Boy Scouts of America Troop 100 of Champion, and he was an assistant manager of T-ball and Little League baseball for his sons.

He also was a member of the American Legion and belonged to a local VFW. Tom also loved traveling around the country to attend many Korean War veterans reunions with his wife, Louise.

Thomas had many passions in life, but his family was always his No. 1 priority. He enjoyed reading Western and thriller novels. He was an avid Cleveland and Youngstown sports fan. Thomas recorded almost every sports event and was a classic movie buff. He enjoyed rewatching games and movies, and he also loved listening to old classical music records. Thomas especially loved polka music and dancing. He enjoyed spending time with his family outside, and he especially loved playing croquet. He always won! He had a magnificent garden for many years. He was quite proud of his homestead and enjoyed teaching family and friends the joys and labors of maintaining a garden and raising chickens. He was often seen riding around on his beloved big blue tractor and occasionally enjoyed a nice cigar while overlooking his pond.

He leaves behind his beloved wife of over 65 years, the former Louise Riska, whom he married Oct. 4, 1958; two children, Gary Crump of Alliance and Thomas Crump of Champion; five grandchildren, Robbie Siladie of Hudson, Ashley Cheung (Claire) of Boardman, Thomas Crump of Youngstown, Alexis Crump of Alliance and Grant Crump of Alliance; one brother, James Crump of New Waterford; and numerous nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors who became family.

Besides his parents, Thomas was preceded in death by brothers Richard, David and Harry Crump and his sister, Nancy Ober.

Family and friends may pay their respects 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 30, 2024, at Peter Rossi & Son Memorial Chapel, 1884 North Road NE, Warren, and 10 to 10:50 a.m. Friday, May 31, 2024, at St. William Catholic Church, 5411 Mahoning Ave. NW, Champion. There will be a Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. Friday, May 31, 2024, at St. William Catholic Church, with the Rev. Ryan Furlong as celebrant.

Burial will follow in All Souls Cemetery in Bazetta, where military honors will be provided by the great men and women of the United States Army.
