Grace E. Hennings 1928-2024

YOUNGSTOWN — Grace E. Hennings, 95, departed this life peacefully at home in the presence of her family, Tuesday, April 30, 2024, after a long illness.

Grace was born to John L. and Annie Scott Burnette on June 14, 1928, in Pensacola, Florida. She was the firstborn of four siblings and the only daughter.

Grace attended Booker T. Washington High School in Pensacola before moving to Detroit, Michigan in 1950. In 1957, she moved to Youngstown and started working as a domestic worker, then moved on to working at the local YMCA. She was employed by St Elizabeth Medical Center as a certified nursing assistant until her retirement in 1990. She was led to the Lord late in life.

Grace was a game show lover and a soap opera fan. She also loved elephants and had a “green thumb” for growing plants.

Grace is survived by her sons, Clarence (Mary) Burnette, George W. Hennings, Roosevelt (Lana) Hennings, all of Youngstown, and Bishop Roderick (Pamela) Hennings of Amherst, New York; a daughter, Karen (Gerald) McBride of Farmington Hills, Michigan; her brother, James Burnette Sr. of Youngstown; two sisters-in-law, Barbara and Clara Burnette; 12 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson; and a host of nieces, nephews, other family and friends.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Kenneth Burnette; and two brothers, Marvin and John L. Burnette Jr.

Visitation will be 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday, May 11, 2024, at Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church, 485 Redondo Road, Youngstown. A celebration of her life and legacy will follow at 10 a.m.
