Robert Hugh Shaw 1931-2024

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — Robert Hugh Shaw, 92, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, April 10, 2024, at his son’s home in Cedar Falls, Iowa , after a seven-year battle with dementia.

Shaw was born Aug. 4, 1931 in Clarion, Pa.

Shaw was a longtime football coach at the high school, collegiate and professional levels. He was named to Clarion University’s all-time football team as a guard and was a Little All-American and captain on the 1952 Clarion Lion’s Bowl championship team. He was the Ohio High School Football Class AA Coach-of-the Year in 1966 after leading the Niles McKinley Red Dragons to an undefeated 10-0 season. He went on to become an assistant coach at Bucknell, Michigan, Cincinnati, Arizona, Southern Illinois, Arkansas, Akron and West Virginia University. He also coached two years of professional football for the New Orleans / Portland Breakers of the United States Football League. At Arkansas and West Virginia, he served as Assistant Head Coach.

He married Anne V. Prelac of Newton Falls in 1955 while serving as an officer in the U.S.Navy.

He will be extremely missed by his family, Robert Shaw of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Kelly Shaw Ronalds of Bethlehem, Pa., Mark (Cara) Shaw of Sammamish, Washington, Tracey Sorrell of Helotes, Texas and John David (Kelly) Shaw of Rocky Mount, Virginia; and grandchildren, Beth (Taylor) Balch, Nick Ronalds, Julie (Brian) Campbell, Katie (Erik) Duke, Maggie Sorrell, Matthew (Lena) Sorrell, Zach Shaw, Alissa Shaw, Taylor Shaw and Nick (Ashley) Bailey; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leona Courson and Robert E. Shaw; his stepfather, Freeman A. Courson; a sister, Yvonne Courson; son-in-law, Michael Wayne Sorrell; and his beloved wife of 60 years, Anne.

Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Joseph Rossi and Sons Funeral Home in Niles.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Niles preceded by a 9:30 a.m. prayer service at the funeral home.

Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Newton Falls.
