Josephine L. Gay 1942-2024

AUSTINTOWN — Josephine L. Gay, 81, passed away peacefully, Saturday morning, April 20, 2024, in the comfort of her home, with her family by her side.

Josephine was born Nov. 3, 1942, in Youngstown, a daughter of the late Thomas A. Leach and Thelma Waller Leach. She was raised by her mother, Thelma and her stepfather, Patsy Romeo, and was a lifelong area resident.

Throughout her lifetime, Josephine held various jobs, demonstrating her dedication to providing for her family. Notably, she worked as a bartender at Krakusky Hall for many years, all while fulfilling her role as a devoted mother and caregiver.

In her leisure time, Josephine found joy in simple pleasures. She was an avid bingo player, a frequenter of garage sales and a lover of fishing excursions. Her evenings were often spent laughing along with the antics of “The Golden Girls” or indulging her passion for Elvis Presley, collecting memorabilia that showcased her admiration for the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll.

Above all else, Josephine enjoyed the moments spent surrounded by her family. She leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter and cherished memories that will forever live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know her.

Josephine is survived by her six children, William (Becky) Gay of Indianapolis, Traci (McNeal) Hemphill of Liberty Township, John Gay of Youngstown, Billie (Chris) Boob of Liberty Township, Paul (Tammy) Gay of Austintown and Pat (Kelley) Gay of Youngstown; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a brother, William Leach of Wellsville; and many nieces, nephews and extended family members.

A son, Michael E. Gay; a grandson, Stanley David; and six siblings, Phoebe Reese, Thomas A. Leach Jr., George Leach, Priscilla Kidd, Annie Grace and Charles F. Leach Sr., preceded Josephine in death.

Family and friends may call 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, April 25, 2024, at Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 N. Meridian Road, Youngstown, where a funeral service will be at 6 p.m.
