Mary Macala 1924-2024

Together again

CAMPBELL — Mary Dubos Macala, 99, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Feb. 29, 2024.

Mary was born on June 27, 1924, to Peter and Sophia Dubos of Campbell.

She graduated from Campbell Memorial High School in 1942. Mary wed her loving husband, George, on Sept. 7, 1946; and they were blessed with three devoted sons, Ronald George, Kenneth Allan and Robert Dale. Mary lost George to illness in 1999, after 53 years of marriage.

Mary and George were lifelong residents of Campbell and were active and devout parishioners at St. Michael Byzantine Catholic Church in Campbell. Mary was a long-time member and officer in the Infant Jesus of Prague Guild, was the financial secretary for the parish and also was a member of several other organizations within the parish. For several years, Mary was the event facilitator for functions at St. Michael Social Hall.

In addition to her service to her parish, Mary was employed early in her marriage by Truscon Co. on Albert Street in Youngstown. She also served for many years as a volunteer family receptionist at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital. Later in life, Mary was employed by Masters Fashions to manage its florist operations in the Youngstown area.

Mary so enjoyed visiting and vacationing with her children and grandchildren. She treasured her family vacations and trips to Cedar Point, Seven Springs, Washington, D.C., Windsor, Ontario, Florida, Hawaii and Myrtle Beach. She especially looked forward to trips to the Bahamas with her friends, Mary Lou, Dorothy and Julie; and, her monthly card club gatherings.

Mary was a gifted chef and cook. Her Slavic and holiday dinners were eagerly anticipated by everyone in her family. Mary always took great pleasure in celebrating birthdays, graduations, weddings and other family events. They provided her with an opportunity to do what she always loved: sharing family stories, memories and hopes for the future.

Mary was preceded in death by her loving husband, George; her parents, Peter and Sophia; her brothers, Stephen and John and their spouses; her sisters, Helen, and Dorothy and her spouse; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and other relatives.

Mary is survived by her loving sons, Attorney Ronald G. (Sally) Macala of Canton, Ohio, Kenneth A. (Maryann) Macala of Boardman, and Robert D. (Dolly) Macala of Boardman. Also surviving Mary are her eight grandchildren, David P. Macala of Baltimore, Maryland, Anne M. (Tony) Fries of Springboro, Ohio, Carolyn B. (Zach) Kountz of Westerville, Ohio, Lauren (Paul) Patterson of Boardman, Andrew K. (Angela) Macala of Campbell, Adam Macala of Boardman, Stephanie (Scott) Yungen of Salem and Melissa (Travis) Bartscher of Vienna. Mary also leaves nine great-grandchildren, Owen, Elliott and Davis Fries, Shepherd Kountz, Sadie Macala, Brianna Bartscher, Peyton and Elliot Yungen and Tristan Smith.

Mary is also survived by several dear nieces, nephews, relatives and their families and many friends, neighbors and admirers.

Mary was a loving, committed and supportive daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and aunt. Her devotion to her immediate and extended family was complete and unconditional. In this respect, Mary was the ‘Gold Standard’. The pain of Mary’s loss will be felt now by all who knew her, but the fond memories of her life and love will endure forever.

Mary’s sons would like to extend their sincere appreciation and thanks to the administrative and support staff at Aventura Assisted Living Center in North Lima, where Mary resided. Their compassionate care and support for Mary was truly a blessing. The family would also like to thank the medical staff at Mercy Health in Boardman
