Evelyn Rita Hannon 1942-2024

MCDONALD — Evelyn Rita Hannon, 81, passed away peacefully, Friday, March 1, 2024, at Heritage Manor, where she had been a resident for the past seven months.

Evelyn was born Nov. 14, 1942, in Youngstown, a daughter of the late Robert Joseph Hannon Sr., and Agnes Donohue Hannon and was a lifelong resident of McDonald.

She was a 1960 graduate of McDonald High School and after graduation, Evelyn embarked on a fulfilling career at Northside Hospital, where she worked diligently in the laboratory. Evelyn was very passionate about her job and worked very hard to earn her credentials as a specialist in genetics.

Evelyn was a lifelong member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in McDonald.

She found joy in the company of her family, friends, nieces, nephews and her dear friend, Richard Proch, whose companionship she treasured deeply. She also maintained a lifelong friendship with the Evans/Smith family.

Evelyn possessed an adventurous spirit and was always ready to “pick up and go” especially if a trip to the casino or shopping trip was involved, usually with her sisters. She loved sightseeing trips to neighboring states and guiding her nieces through exhilarating adventures in rock climbing at various parks.

Her unique sense of humor endeared her to all who knew her, and Evelyn didn’t mind laughing at herself on occasion. She had a passion for history, especially family history and the history of the Village of McDonald. Evelyn served as the curator of the McDonald Historical Society and was renowned for her wealth of knowledge which she often shared with others.

Evelyn was very proud of her Irish heritage and visited Ireland twice. Her visits to Ireland were a source of immense joy, and she regaled her loved ones with tales of her adventures abroad.

A beloved aunt, Evelyn delighted her nieces and nephews with annual Christmas traditions. Her “claim to fame” was hiding ceramic frogs in the Christmas tree for her nieces and nephews to find. This playful tradition, a testament to Evelyn’s creativity and love, brought smiles and laughter that echoed through the years. Evelyn was also known for her chocolate chip cookies and her secret, five chocolate chips per cookie.

Evelyn leaves to forever cherish her memory, her six siblings, Joanne Radabaugh, Kathleen Hannon, Jane Tock, Jean McBride, Reverend Robert Joseph Hannon Jr., and Thomas (Dorothy) Hannon; and many nieces and nephews.

Family and friends may gather to pay respects from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 6, 2024, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 618 Ohio Ave., McDonald, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday.

Interment will follow in Kerr Cemetery in Mineral Ridge, where Evelyn will be laid to rest beside her mother and father.

In lieu of flowers, Evelyn’s family suggests memorial contributions be made to Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 618 Ohio Ave., McDonald, OH 44437.
