Dr. John L. Zumrick 1946-2021
FLEMING ISLAND, Fla. — Dr. John L. Zumrick, 75, passed away at the hospital, Sunday, Nov. 7, 2021.
Dr. Zumrick was born in Youngstown, on May 22, 1946.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John L. and Rose Javorsky Zumrick; and his brother, Kenneth Zumrick of Hubbard. He is survived by his sister-in-law, Angela Zumrick; niece, Susan Zumrick; and nephew, John (Celeste) Zumrick. He attended St. Matthias grade school, Wilson High School Class of 1964 and The Ohio State University.
After graduating as a medical physician from Ohio State Medical School, he joined the Navy to combine his hobby of diving with his career of medicine. He became the chief medical diving officer at the Navy’s Experimental Diving Unit, while simultaneously pioneering the earliest days of underwater cave exploration and authoring the first cavern diving manual, which remains in print. Furthering his education, he completed residency in anesthesiology at Bethesda Naval Hospital and retired in 1994. Captain Zumrick, M.D., served in the Navy in Connecticut, Maryland, Virginia and Florida before retiring to his Fleming Island home.
A military funeral will be held at a later date.
