Sallye Cohen Frohman 1929-2021

BOCA RATON, Fla. — Sallye Cohen Frohman, 91, died peacefully Sunday, Aug. 1, 2021, at her home in Boca Raton, Florida, with her son, Richard, by her side.

She was born Aug. 10, 1929, in Pittsburgh.

Sallye was predeceased by her husband of 43 years, Harry Cohen.

She is survived by her son, Richard; daughter-in-law, Emily; grandchildren, Ella and Eddie; and by her husband of the last 23 years, Al Frohman.

Sallye Silverman was 22 when she married Harry Cohen, then 35, in 1952. Both were children of Jewish refugees from Eastern Europe.

Sallye, Harry and Richard moved from Pittsburgh to Youngstown in 1964, where Sallye and Harry opened the women’s clothing boutique, Country Casuals at the Liberty Plaza. Sallye and Harry lived a richly gratifying life in the Youngstown community for over 30 years. Sallye’s gregariousness, generosity and perpetual smile were magnets for her ever-expanding galaxy of friends, none of whom she ever forgot or abandoned. Sallye had a limitless capacity to find joy in life, and no one ever enjoyed a party more than she did! Harry often said it would be “social suicide to hold a party without Sallye.”

Over the years, Sallye was a mentor for countless women and girls, who sought her fashion and relationship counsel (she was an irrepressible matchmaker) and her friendship, all of which she offered from her perch at Country Casuals, which became much more than just an apparel store, doubling as a warm gathering place — like “Cheers” — where everyone knew your name. The Cohens were members of the JCC and Rodef Sholom Temple, where Sallye remained a member for life, and she was active in Jewish Federation of Youngstown and later Palm Beach County, where Sallye was a Lion of Judah.

Harry died in 1995, and Sallye married Al Frohman in 1998, and moved to Boca Raton, Florida, where they have lived happily retired for over 20 years and where Al continues to live.

As she did in Youngstown, Sallye put her stamp on an always-widening community of new friends in Florida. At her joyous 90th birthday party in Boca Raton in 2019, Sallye hosted 50 longtime friends, every one of whom Sallye called a “best friend.”

Sallye has returned to Youngstown to rest beside Harry. A service will be held in the Chapel in the Rodef Sholom section of Tod Homestead Cemetery, 2200 Belmont Ave., Youngstown at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2021, and will also be streamed via Zoom (for details go to (www.congregationrodefsholom.org).

Following the service, Sallye’s family will welcome well-wishers at the home of the family’s dear friends, Cyndi and Nick Katz, in Hubbard from 4 to 7 p.m.

The family will sit shiva at the home of Richard and Emily Cohen, in Mamaroneck, NY 10543, on Thursday, Aug. 5, from 5 to 9 p.m. and Friday Aug. 6, from noon to 4 p.m.

Sallye asked that any tribute in her memory be via gift to either Rodef Sholom Congregation, Youngstown, OH 44505; Congregation Emanu-El of Westchester, Rye NY 10580; or the American Jewish Committee, New York City.
