Bertram Tamarkin 1926-2021

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — Bertram Tamarkin, 94, passed away Tuesday, July 27, 2021, in West Palm Beach, after a long battle with bladder cancer.

Bertram was known to everyone as Bud or Buddy, fitting nicknames for a man who had many thousands of friends in his long life.

Bud was born Aug. 6, 1926, in Youngstown. He was preceded in death by his parents, Pearl and Jack Tamarkin, in the early 1970s, and by his beloved wife Bernita, who died in April 2004.

He was a proud graduate of The Rayen School in Youngstown and the University of Michigan. In the early 1980s, Bud went back to school and received a master’s degree in gerontology from Youngstown State and Kent State universities.

For more than 30 years, Buddy played an instrumental role in the growth and success of The Tamarkin Company, United Family Foods and Valu King Supermarkets. He also spent decades volunteering his extra time at United Way in Youngstown and Palm Beach, and the Youngstown Area Jewish Federation.

Bud Tamarkin’s warmth, kindness, outstanding sense of humor and intelligence will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him. He was a true mensch, a man who volunteered countless hours and days to those who are less fortunate. He was an extraordinary husband, father and grandfather, and his commitment to making our world a better, fairer place will never be forgotten.

He is survived by sons, Jon of Los Angeles and Jeff of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; and three grandchildren, Jennifer, Joe and Nick Tamarkin.

Funeral services will be held 11:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 2, 2021, at Itts Memorial Chapel, Anshe Emeth Cemetery on Granada Avenue in Youngstown, where the family will receive visitors from 11 to 11:25 a.m. prior to the service in the cemetery chapel.

Donations in remembrance of Bud may be made to the United Way of Youngstown, the Youngstown Jewish Federation or the charity of your choice.

Arrangements have been entrusted to The Shriver-Allison-Courtley-Weller-King Funeral Home. Friends and family may view this obituary and share memories and their condolences at www.shriverallisoncourtleyfuneralhome.com.
