John H. Miller 1931-2021

CHAGRIN FALLS — John H. “Jack” Miller, 89, passed away Sunday, Jan. 24, 2021, of natural causes.

He was born Dec. 3, 1931, in Youngstown, to William J. and Ruth F. Miller.

Jack graduated from The Rayen School in 1949. He then majored in mechanical engineering at Duke University, graduating in 1953. Following graduation, Jack served in the Air Force, attaining the rank of corporal, stationed at Andrews Air Force Base.

After the Air Force, Jack joined Hy-Way Heat Systems, Inc., founded by his father, where he spent his entire career as a mechanical engineer, alongside his brother, Bill. The company manufactured hot oil heaters and paving equipment for the road paving industry. Jack’s keen acumen led to the development of eight U.S. patents in his field.

In his early years, Jack attended Calvary Baptist Church in Youngstown, where he served as a deacon. After a move to the North Side of town, Jack joined The First Presbyterian Church. He was a lifelong member of The Youngstown Country Club, and after retirement, Jack enjoyed his tenure as president of Belmont Park Cemetery.

Jack will always be remembered for his love of family, friends, his jovial sense of humor, infectious personality and loyalty to the Duke Blue Devils and the Cleveland Browns. His passion for fishing, the outdoors, gardening and playing the piano always defined him.

Jack was preceded in death by his loving wife of 46 years, Janet Cailor Miller.

He is survived by his loving children: son, Tim (Vickie) of Cincinnati; and daughters, Susan of New York City and Pam (Greg) Roche of Aurora. He leaves behind five beloved grandchildren, Jeff and Ali Miller, and Jack, Colin and Cailor Roche; and many cherished cousins, nieces and nephews.

The family would like to offer their sincere thanks and appreciation to Arden Courts of Chagrin Falls for their tremendous care given to Jack.
