Raymond H. Hanna 1945-2019
WOODSTOCK, Ga. — Raymond “Ray” Henry Hanna, 74, formerly of Youngstown, Ohio, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2019.
Ray was born Feb. 13, 1945, in Youngstown, a son of Samuel and Rose Jordan Hanna.
Ray graduated from Boardman High School in 1963 and attended Youngstown State University.
While in high school, he worked at Brown’s Drug Store in Boardman. Following college, he was accepted as a glazier into the apprenticeship program at Youngstown Mirror and Glass where he worked from 1965 to 1972. Later he became a supervisor for Kleinert’s Shoes in Kutztown, Pa., which began his career in management. He and his family returned to Youngstown and began working at Warren Molded Plastics in Salem, Ohio, which later became Worthington Industries.
During his 32 years with Worthington (1973- 2005), Ray became supervisor, department head and general manager in Salem in 1990. Ray also spent 10 years with Worthington in Mason, Ohio, while living in Fairfield (Cincinnati). He spent the last six years of his career working for CK Technologies in Montpelier, Ohio, and Mount Airy, N.C. Ray officially retired in 2010. He and Judi moved to Naples, Fla. in 2011. In 2014, Ray and Judi made their permanent residence in Atlanta, Ga.
Ray loved baseball and everyone knew his favorite team was the New York Yankees! He especially loved coaching youth baseball, which he did for five decades. He began his coaching career with the Mill Creek Pony League in Youngstown starting in 1970 for 14 to 15 year-olds. He continued with his two daughters’ softball teams and his son’s little league teams throughout the 1980s in Fairfield, Ohio. By the 1990s, Ray was coaching his son’s Pony League teams back in Youngstown. Ray continued coaching his grandson’s team in Roswell, Ga. until the summer of 2019.
Ray married Judi Nussbaumer on April 15, 1967. They just celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary. Ray and Judi have three children, Laurie (Mike) Carlton of Roswell, Ga., Renee (Dave) Fischer of Mason, Ohio and Jason (Stacy) of Cincinnati, Ohio. They have nine grandchildren, Jason, Will, Henry, Hanna, Raymond, Mary Helen (Carlton) and Caroline, John and Emily (Fischer). Ray leaves behind four siblings, Dolores Texter, Joseph Hanna, Robert Hanna and Elaine Williams, all of Youngstown, Ohio. He leaves many nieces and nephews who adored him. He also had three godchildren, Christopher, Christine and Karissa.
Ray was a devout Maronite and Roman Catholic. He attended Cursillo in 1978 in Youngstown, where he served on many teams, was rector and was involved in Ultreya for 41 years in three states. Ray continued to serve the many parishes to which he belonged as an usher, lector, greeter, Family Life member, and was involved in parish council, Christ Renews His Parish, Pre-Cana and many other ministries. He always arrived to church early, sat in the front and he prayed the rosary everyday. Ray was also a fourth degree Knight of Columbus.
Ray was a family man, he loved a good laugh, spending time with Judi and his grandkids. He loved watching old Western movies. Ray enjoyed playing card games with the neighbors and he was an original member of the Hanna/Carlton/Fischer Football Pool. He lit up a room when he walked in, he always had a positive attitude and he found the good in everyone. He had the best smile. Ray was very proud of his Lebanese and Italian heritage.
Besides his parents, his niece/goddaughter, Christine Hanna; and two brothers-in-law, David Texter and Chuck Williams; preceded Ray in death.
Calling hours were held Sunday, Sept. 29, 2019, at Northside Chapel in Roswell, Ga.
A Mass of Christian burial was held Monday, Sept. 30, 2019, at Saint Peter Chanel Catholic Church, also in Roswell.
There will be a 40-day Mass of Remembrance for Ray at 10 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 3, 2019, at St. Maron Church in Youngstown, Ohio.
