Eugene E. Dempsey 1928-2019

POLAND — Eugene Edward Dempsey, 91, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2019, at Hospice of the Valley Hospice House with his family by his side.

Eugene, known by his family and friends as Gene, was born July 30, 1928, in Youngstown, the son of the late John and Lois Reichman Dempsey.

He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during the Korean Conflict. Gene attended Valley Forge Military Academy, the Ohio State University, and the Graduate School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin.

He worked for Mahoning National Bank for 35 years, retiring as a vice president. He also worked for the Stanjim Co. for 20 years.

Gene was a professional musician and member of the American Federation of Musicians union. He played tuba with the Ohio State Marching Band and string and electric bass for 40 years with the Frankie Ambrose Orchestra and the Rocky Chirchiglia Band.

His extensive involvement with the community included South Side Lions Club, Rotary and Kiwanis clubs, the American Institute of Banking, South Side Merchants Association, Youngstown Playhouse, Boardman Orchestra Parents, Youngstown Area United Appeal campaign, Mahoning County Board of Elections, and ushering at Youngstown State University sporting events.

Gene is survived by his wife of 65 years, the former Ann Marie D’Agostino, whom he married on June 19, 1954; and two sons, Michael D. Dempsey of Boardman and John E. Dempsey of Lakewood.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, and siblings Lois Ann Fellers, John Dempsey, Phillip Dempsey and Donald Dempsey.

A devoted husband, father and brother, Gene will be deeply missed by his family and friends.

There will be a memorial service at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, 2019, at Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, 270 N. Main St., Poland. Family and friends may call preceding the service from 10 to 10:45 a.m.
