Catherine Joy Popoczy 1938-2019

Born July 29, 1938, in Crooksville, Ohio, she graduated from Notre Dame Academy, Cleveland, in 1956 and entered the Sisters of Notre Dame that same year. In 1970 she entered the Humility of Mary Congregation.

Sr. Cathy Joy dedicated 43 years to ministerial service as a teacher, pastoral minister and certified chaplain. She taught at St. James, Warren, and served at St. Joseph Riverside Hospital from 1974-2003 when she joined her sisters in the HM Ministry of Prayer at Villa Maria Community Center, Villa Maria Pa., a ministry in which she served until her death. Sr. Cathy Joy regularly rode with the Warren police on Saturday nights in her role as chaplain.

The daughter of the late Joseph and Theresa (nee Susa) Popoczy, she is survived by her sisters Josephine Sceranko and her twin, Sr. Mary Popoczy, SND; her brother, Joseph Paul Popoczy; and by her sisters in the Humility of Mary Congregation with whom she shared her life for 49 years.

Friends may call 3:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19, 2019, with a 7 p.m. prayer service to follow, and 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. Friday at Villa Maria Chapel, Villa Maria, Pa. The funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 20, 2019 at the chapel.
