Letters to the editor

Administration makes us wonder DEAR EDITOR: We are all familiar with the line, “Oh, say, does that star-spangled banner still wave o’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?” but many do not realize that that famous line in our national anthem is actually a question. Considering the destructive and incompetent decisions being made by our administration and the cowardly silence of our Republican representatives, it appears that the answer to that question is “NO.” THOMAS BRENT Struthers Community School nearing reality DEAR EDITOR While driving down South ...

Tucker’s somebody days are nearing end

Tucker Carlson’s problem, it would seem, is that what he says doesn’t matter, because he has a long history of not saying what he thinks. True, he once starred at Fox News, and even now his followers on social media number in the millions. But he’s shifted into crackpot conspiracies and turning on Donald Trump. Anything for an audience. Carlson long hated Trump in his heart while praise poured from his mouth. The war in Iran polls poorly as does Trump, and so Carlson uses the opportunity to inflate his diminished importance by blaming himself for making Trump possible. ...

Orchids & onions

ORCHID: To Mark Lamoncha, president and CEO of Columbiana-based Humtown Products, for being honored by President Donald Trump earlier this week as Small Business Person of the Year for the U.S. Small Business Administration. Lamoncha was selected among all other state nominees for the prestigious honor. And for good reason. He has overseen amazing production and hiring growth in recent years at Humtown, a global leader of conventional and 3D printed sand cores and molds. In his remarks, the president said the federal government could use more leaders just like Lamoncha. Truer words were ...

The real reason Trump doesn’t want Congress to vote on war powers

April 30 marked 60 days since the start of Trump’s failed war in Iran. The U.S. Constitution (Article I, Section 8) gives Congress the power “To declare War,” and the War Powers Resolution of 1973 — enacted over Nixon’s veto — mandates that troops be withdrawn within 60 days unless Congress extends the deadline or declares war. Last week, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth claimed that Trump doesn’t need Congress’ approval to continue the war past the 60-day mark because the ceasefire agreement with Iran has effectively stopped the clock. (Trump echoed Hegseth’s claim in ...

Same old, same old: Target Trump

At the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, President Donald Trump was the target of yet a third assassination attempt — this time in full view of the Washington press corps. The event was presented as a spirited night with Trump. After 11 years of avoiding the predominantly left-wing media event, he decided to revisit the dinner. He anticipated that he would be the object of ridicule inside the hall — and that he might see possible violence outside it. Indeed, protesters ringed the hotel. In grimly prescient fashion, the usual sort of crowd that night was channeling John Wilkes ...

Sound off!

I waited until after the May 5 elections before submitting this. My question is this. How is it that Mark Hanni was not ticketed for crashing his Cadillac through an Arby’s restaurant window? Supposedly he was sitting in his car with the engine running with his foot on the brake with the car in drive. His carelessness and lack of common sense caused significant damage to the building. More importantly, someone could have been seriously hurt! An investigation should be launched into why he wasn’t issued a citation. — Canfield State Sen. Al Cutrona had to intervene to help ...
