Why is President Trump playing the Communist card?

Trump has run out of cards to play in the midterm elections, which is why he’s now talking about the “communist menace.” He can’t talk about the economy, because prices continue to rise faster than wages, which means most Americans are getting poorer. He can’t talk about foreign policy, because his war in Iran has been a debacle, his tariffs are an utter failure, and he obviously hasn’t settled the war in Ukraine on “Day 1.” He can’t talk about immigration, because his raids and mass deportations have become so unpopular. So, facing the midterm elections, ...

Slam the brakes on accelerating cycle crashes

Most of us no doubt in recent years have caught a glimpse of those conspicuously placed messages on bumper stickers and yard signs distributed by the Ohio Safety Council that sport bright yellow backgrounds and roar out these four simple emboldened words: “LOOK OUT FOR MOTORCYCLES.” Sadly, far too many of us fail to heed that crucial and potentially life-saving advice. Roadways across Ohio filled with smashed pieces of once-slick and shiny Harleys and Kawasakis as well as severely injured — many fatally — cyclists prove that point all too well. In fact, Ohio has witnessed ...

Are you chasing false gods?

My sadly departed friend, Frank, was a unicorn. He lived 89 years in the town he grew up in, a village on the Connecticut shore. A reporter at his local newspaper for over half a century, he had turned down offers to work for more glamorous publications, among them Sports Illustrated and The New York Times. Frank had considered the priesthood in his youth. He stopped going to church and claimed he wasn’t part of it anymore, but the church’s moral teachings clearly stayed put. Frank approached reporting as a kind of ministry, spending much time talking with his “flock.” His ...

Sound off!

I apologize for not realizing that a President shows how much he cares for the average citizen by how much their retirement account earns. It’s not if people can’t afford housing, food, medication or gasoline. It’s not that the president has enriched himself by over $2 billion while in office. It’s not that the president pardoned 1,500 thugs who attacked our Capitol. I’m sure the millions of people who have NO retirement accounts are very happy that you earned $63,000 in yours. Congrats to you! — Youngstown Last year DJT made $2.2 billion off of being the president. About ...

Mamdani’s twisted view of US

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani delivered a Fourth of July message that sounded like America is on its death bed. Immigrant citizens standing on each side of him as he sat at a desk used by George Washington, were even more stoic. July Fourth is supposed to be a celebratory time. Not for Mamdani, who looked as if he had lost his best friend. After some obligatory praise for the nation to which he immigrated, Mamdani said that for “the powerful, America is an arena of supremacy, where only a select few are allowed freedom, where not all are created equal. America, if you ask ...

Letters to the editor

Youngstown can help heal today’s society DEAR EDITOR: Fifty years ago, on the bicentennial of the U.S., in 1976, the late Howard Aley published a book, “A Heritage to Share” giving a complete history of the Youngstown area from prehistoric times until July 4, 1976. He grew up on the South Side, graduated from South High School and YSU, was the editor of the Jambar and Trinity Chimes and was a teacher at Wilson High School for years. He referenced much of his book from Joseph Butler, the founder of the Butler Art museum. Joseph Butler was also a historian of Youngstown, writing ...
