Two lawsuits filed in crash that killed Canfield state trooper

YOUNGSTOWN — The estate of Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper Nicholas Cayton has filed a lawsuit against the driver of the concrete truck who hit the back of Cayton’s cruiser Oct. 16 on state Route 11 in Canfield, killing Cayton. The estate also sued the company where the truck driver worked. The truck driver who was injured but survived the crash also has filed a lawsuit naming those same defendants. YOUNGSTOWN — Two downtown events scheduled for this weekend have been postponed because of expected poor weather conditions. The America 250 First Fridays, which was to take place from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday along North Phelps Street and West Federal Street, was postponed because of expected extreme heat. 2 men arrested in Tuesday night shooting on East Dewey Avenue

YOUNGSTOWN — Two men are in custody in the Mahoning County jail following a late Tuesday shooting on East Dewey Avenue on Youngstown’s South Side that left a man in critical condition at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital. A Youngstown police report states that officers were called to East Dewey at 11:25 p.m. Tuesday for a shooting and saw a man lying on the sidewalk in front of a house with a gunshot wound to the head. Renovation gets $2M additional tax credit

YOUNGSTOWN — The $21.66 million planned renovation project to Youngstown’s tallest building received another state tax credit. The state on Wednesday awarded a $2 million Transformational Mixed-Use Development Program grant to the proposed Central Tower project. The project on June 24 received notice about a $4.25 million state historic preservation tax credit. Staff report A renewed effort to aid salaried Delphi retirees obtain pension benefits was thwarted Tuesday. The Dayton Daily News reported U.S. Rep. Virginia Foxx, R-North Carolina., prevented the advancement of an amendment to a $1 billion spending package. Foxx chairs the House Rules Committee, where the amendment required its approval. New Castle man convicted of charges against woman in Liberty

Staff report WARREN — A Trumbull County jury on Tuesday found Justin L. Fry-Starrett, 33, of New Castle, Pa., guilty in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court of felonious assault, domestic violence and failure to comply with the order or signal of a police officer. Fry-Starrett, who has been incarcerated in Trumbull County jail, will undergo a background investigation prior to sentencing by Judge Cynthia Westcott.
