Two injured in weekend shooting in Boardman

BOARDMAN — Police are still investigating a shooting that resulted in a car crash over the weekend.

A Boardman Police Department report states that while no one was killed, two women were injured in the incident. Two young children who were also in the car at the time were not reported injured, although their condition was not explicitly stated.

The report states that when police responded to the emergency call about 7:20 p.m. Saturday, they found a car overturned near the intersection of Market Street and Meadowbrook Avenue and two women in the car being tended by Boardman Fire Department emergency medical staff.

One woman had been shot in her left arm or wrist, and the other had wounds to her face, likely from the shattered glass of the window. The report does not state whether either woman was transported to the hospital.

The report states that one of the women told police the 1-year-old and 4-year-old boys in the car were her nephews.

After speaking to the victims and multiple witnesses in the area, police determined that the shooting actually happened near the intersection of Meadowbrook and Southern Boulevard.

Police discovered at least 10 9-mm shell casings near that site.

Several witnesses said the victims’ silver SUV and a dark-colored sedan were driving north on Southern Boulevard, with a man wearing a black and red hoodie leaning out of a car window, shooting at the SUV.

The SUV continued along Meadowbrook after the shooting and overturned at Market Street.

Witnesses on Gertrude Avenue told police similar stories and one showed them where a bullet from the shooting had damaged a window in their home.

The police report states at least one of the victims told police she recognized the shooter because they have a history of bad blood between them.

She said she saw the men in the sedan at the Gateway Gas Mart on South Avenue, and locked eyes with one of them. She said they followed her vehicle from there, pulling up alongside her and opening fire as they approached Meadowbrook.

Police went to the gas station and the report states they were able to view the station’s security camera video, which showed four men, including one matching the description of the shooter, getting into a black Chevrolet sedan that also matched the victim and witness descriptions.

The report states that police were able to see a temporary tag in the upper left of the rear window, and determined that it was registered to someone in Campbell.

A Flock license plate camera on South Avenue captured that same vehicle passing by it on three occasions that day, between 4:18 p.m. and 7:24 p.m. A Flock camera along Interstate 680 also picked up the vehicle on July 4.
