LIBERTY — The Liberty Police Department has filed criminal charges against Christina Marie Merrick, 48, former president of the Liberty Local School District’s wrestling and soccer booster programs, following an investigation into embezzled funds.

Liberty police Chief Ray Buhala said Merrick, of Liberty, has been charged with two counts of theft — fourth- and fifth-degree felonies — and misuse of credit cards in connection with the theft of approximately $40,000 from the booster organizations’ accounts.

The investigation was launched in June after board members reported financial irregularities.

Detectives “determined that Merrick exploited her leadership position to unlawfully divert funds originally raised to support local student-athletes for personal use between September 2025 and June 2026,” Buhala said in a statement.

“Stealing from a community organization is unacceptable, but taking resources directly meant to support our youth is particularly egregious,” he said. “Our department worked diligently to trace these accounts and we are committed to holding those in positions of trust accountable for their actions.”

Merrick was issued a summons on Monday and is scheduled to appear for arraignment Aug. 4 in Girard Municipal Court.

Liberty Superintendent Brian Knight said athletic booster organizations are independent entities and are not operated, governed or financially managed by the school district.

“While booster organizations provide valuable support to our students and athletic programs, the district does not oversee their financial operations,” Knight said.

“We are aware of the concerns that have been raised. However, because this matter involves an independent organization, the district is unable to comment further, including on any investigation that may be taking place.”
