Council shifts $1.4M to Inspiring Minds for community center

WARREN — City Council on Wednesday approved redirecting more than $1.4 million in previously allocated community project funds to Inspiring Minds for a community center.

Council voted to move $1,425,000 from the Western Reserve Port Authority project to Inspiring Minds. Further details will be discussed during a meeting in the coming weeks when Inspiring Minds will be present.

It also approved $50,000 to the Trumbull Neighborhood Partnership as fiscal agent for the South Eastside Community Association, or SESCA. A remaining $25,000 will stay with the WRPA for a waterline project.

Shirley Robinson and Farrah Jones spoke to council and described their group’s work keeping children active, cutting grass, maintaining vacant lots and strengthening community on the city’s southeast side.

Council member Tina Milner, D-2nd Ward, cast the lone “no” vote on the SESCA funds, calling the $50,000 “excessive.” She cited needs at North End Park, including no running water and unusable bathrooms, and said other council members have restoration needs in their wards. Milner also said the group had previously received $50,000 in American Rescue Plan funds.

Starting at $3.85/week.
