2 men arrested in Tuesday night shooting on East Dewey Avenue
YOUNGSTOWN — Two men are in custody in the Mahoning County jail following a late Tuesday shooting on East Dewey Avenue on Youngstown’s South Side that left a man in critical condition at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital.
A Youngstown police report states that officers were called to East Dewey at 11:25 p.m. Tuesday for a shooting and saw a man lying on the sidewalk in front of a house with a gunshot wound to the head. He was taken to the hospital and was in critical condition at the time the report was written, the report states.
Officers were advised that the blue suspect vehicle was possibly heading “back to Ridge Avenue.” An officer left Dewey and went to Ridge, where he saw a blue Jeep Compass traveling west on Ridge.
The officer got behind the vehicle as it proceeded onto Thorne Avenue on the South Side, then Woodland Avenue, north on Hillman Street and back onto Woodland and then on Ridge again.
When other police cars joined, they made a stop on the vehicle as three people exited the vehicle.
James Neail, 42, the driver, and a passenger were ordered to the ground in a prone position, and they complied. A third man also was present, the report states. All three men were taken to the Youngstown Police Department to talk to detectives.
Neail was searched, and a hard object was found in Neail’s pocket. When it was removed, it was apparent that it was a plastic baggie containing crack cocaine. Cash also was found in another pocket.
According to Youngstown Municipal Court records, Neail was charged with felony drug possession and was arraigned Wednesday afternoon. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing at 9:30 a.m. July 8, court records show.
Another of the suspects named in the report does not have any new charges listed in Youngstown Municipal Court records even though he is in the Mahoning County jail. The report states that a handgun was removed from his waistband and the report lists a crime with which officers were planning to charge him.
He is not being named until charges are officially filed against him by prosecutors.
Part of the report is blacked out, possibly explaining why a third person is mentioned in the report but nothing in the report tells what type of offense the person may have committed.
EARLIER SHOOTING
East Dewey Avenue is also where the fourth homicide of the year happened in the 900 block May 27. The Youngstown Police Department blacked out the address of the shooting Wednesday night, so it is not known how close on East Dewey Avenue the two shootings were.
In the May 27 homicide, Ty-Ron Perry Jr., 16, was shot to death early May 27. Darius Smith, 22, is charged with murder in the case.
Ty-Ron’s obituary states that he lived in Akron and “carried a kindness behind that crooked smile and freckles, let us not forget about that orange tangled curls. A personality that was unmistakable especially at his youthful age. Not your average young man, he was courageous and authentic.”
It stated that “Boogie was a red headed Rockstar with a future and a rare sense of serenity. A relentless legend to those who he will forever be cherished and loved by.”
Bond was set at $1 million during the arraignment hearing in Youngstown Municipal Court for Smith.
