Scrappers hold off first-place Thunder, win 6-4
NILES — Just as the Mahoning Valley entered its first official heat wave of the summer, the Mahoning Valley Scrappers played host to the hottest team in the MLB Draft League.
The Trenton Thunder, who have owned first place in the league standings since the start of the season, played the Scrappers on Tuesday in the first game of a brief two-game series at 717 Credit Union Field.
The Scrappers at least temporarily cooled down Trenton with a 6-4 win.
The Scrappers quieted the Thunder from the start. Ethan Lindor walked to start the bottom of the first inning. Lindor stole second, then scored the game’s first run on a Tommy Harrison double.
Trenton starting pitcher Elijah Foster then pitched his way into a major jam in the second, and the Scrappers took advantage. Foster hit three consecutive batters to start the inning. A Josue Malave groundout scored the Scrappers’ second run. Carlos Sanchez gave the Scrappers a 3-0 advantage with his team-leading ninth double of the season.
Sanchez also leads the Scrappers in home runs (3), RBI (21) and batting average (.338).
Trenton cut its deficit to 3-1 in the top of the fourth with an Augie Lopez solo home run. However, MV immediately answered in the bottom half of the inning when Jimmy Keenan belted his first home run of the season over the centerfield wall.
The Thunder again cut its deficit to two runs in the fifth. And again, the Scrappers answered in the bottom half of the fifth, this time with a Keenan RBI sacrifice fly.
The Scrappers extended their lead to 6-2 in the sixth on a Harrison RBI groundout.
Trenton scored a pair of runs in the eighth and stranded three runners to end the inning. Jeremiah Newman, who entered the game with the bases loaded, recorded a strikeout to prevent further damage. Newman then retired the side in order in the ninth to secure a save and a win for the Scrappers.
Despite the setback, the Thunder (17-7) remain atop the Draft League standings. The Scrappers (11-14) remain in last place.
The Scrappers and Thunder return to 717 Credit Union Field today at 7:05 p.m.
