3 indicted in robbery on city’s North Side
Another man charged in assault on officer
YOUNGSTOWN — Three men have been indicted on aggravated robbery with a firearm specification in an April 21 incident on Hammaker Street on the North Side in which they are accused of robbing a man at gunpoint and taking his backpack/cross-body satchel, which contained a handgun, paperwork from his job and his wallet.
The three men indicted are Keanu D. Shelton, 31, of Alameda Avenue; Darrell Haynes, 60, whose address is listed as the Mahoning County jail; and Wayne Kerns, 36, of Volney Road.
In addition to the aggravated robbery charges and gun specifications, Haynes and Kerns were indicted on being a felon in possession of a firearm.
Officers responded to Hammaker Street for a robbery and spoke with the alleged victim, who said he was sitting in his vehicle when three men, including Shelton and a man who frequently begs at a corner store at Belmont Avenue and Wirt Street approached him, according to a Youngstown police report.
The three men questioned the alleged victim about something that happened in the past and a gun was pointed at the victim’s head, the alleged victim stated. After the three men took the backpack/satchel containing the handgun, paper and wallet from the alleged victim, they walked away. As they did, one of them fired a shot at the alleged victim’s car, the alleged victim said. An officer saw a bullet hole in the driver’s side rear-view mirror of the car, the report states.
The victim said all three men had guns, and they pointed them at him. No bullet shell casings were found at the scene.
Officers later located Shelton’s vehicle on Alameda Avenue. The report did not state how Shelton was found and taken into custody, but it stated that Shelton “was going to be placed under arrest for aggravated robbery to be later transported to the Mahoning County jail.”
The indictments for all three men were issued together as part of the same case, and their offenses all occurred the same day, April 21, according to court documents.
HARVEY
Also indicted was Tomiko Harvey, 50, of Lora Avenue on felony assault and misdemeanor obstructing official business.
The charges stem from a May 3 incident on Youngstown’s North Side in which Harvey is accused of assaulting a lieutenant for the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office after the officer approached Harvey following a motor vehicle crash.
A Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office report states that a sheriff’s lieutenant was driving north on Fifth Avenue early May 3 on her way to conduct nightly security rounds at the Mahoning County Juvenile Justice Center and two other North Side locations when the lieutenant saw a motor vehicle crash on Fifth Avenue.
The report states that the deputy was at the intersection of Fifth and Fairgreen avenues on the North Side when she saw a crash that appeared to have just occurred.
The deputy advised dispatch of the accident and approached the closest vehicle to check everyone’s well-being. One of the people said a man in the back seat of one of the cars was disoriented. He was later identified as Harvey.
The report states that the deputy spoke with the driver of that car, and Harvey tried to get out of the car. The deputy saw that Harvey had a large bump on his temple that led the deputy to believe Harvey had been involved in the accident, the report states.
The deputy identified herself and asked Harvey to sit back down. Harvey complied, the report states.
The driver of the car said “they did not know Harvey and that they just had him sitting in the car because he did not feel well. At this time, Harvey again got out of the vehicle and attempted to push past me,” the report states.
“I advised him that he needed to remain where he was until YPD arrived and talked to him. He then physically tried to move me out of the way, at which point I grabbed a hold of the vest he was wearing to stop him,” the deputy’s report states.
Harvey then “grabbed a hold of both of my wrists to gain control of me and allow himself to get away,” the report states. “Harvey was able to get out of his vest and throw me to the ground.” Harvey then ran from the scene.
A Youngstown officer who had responded to the crash reported seeing the officer pushed to the ground, and the suspect running away. The officer subdued Harvey and took him into custody.
YOCHMAN
Also indicted was Xavier R. Yochman, 22, of Delaware Avenue in Lake Milton on felonious assault with a firearm specification and misdemeanor criminal damaging or endangering in a superseding indictment.
Yochman was indicted in January on felonious assault and a firearm specification. The superseding indictment adds the misdemeanor charge.
The charges relate to an incident in November at Chipper’s Sports Bar in Austintown in which Yochman is accused of shooting another man.
When Austintown police arrived, they found a man sitting in a chair outside of the bar with several people around him, some tending to his wounds. He had visible gunshot wounds to his upper arms on both sides, a report states.
The victim and witnesses said the altercation began with a verbal disagreement inside the bar and moved out to the parking lot. One witness told police he heard four to five shots not long after the men walked outside.
The report states that Yochman told officers when he was being arrested in Lake Milton that the victim had called him names and tried to fight him. He said he has had problems with the man for years.
Yochman told police he is “a small guy” and “not a fighter” and determined that he needed to defend himself, but that he made a mistake. Yochman also told police the man did not hit him or attempt to hit him, the report states. Yochman asked police if they knew how long he’d have to go to jail and said he did not aim for the man’s head.
