Woman jailed then released after East Side stabbing

YOUNGSTOWN — A woman was arrested Sunday at an apartment on Kendis Circle on the East Side after officers were called there at 4:14 p.m. for the stabbing of a man. In a separate incident, an inmate at the Northeast Ohio Correctional Center was stabbed Saturday and taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital for treatment.

When officers arrived on Kendis Circle Sunday, they detained and handcuffed the woman. Officers spoke with the victim as he exited the laundry room of the apartment complex with a stab wound to his left triceps area above the elbow and scratches to his face and back.

The victim stated that he and the woman were arguing when she threw his clothes out of the apartment, which escalated into a physical altercation. He said he knew that the woman scratched him, but he was not sure if she stabbed him. He said he did not want to pursue charges, but during the 911 call he stated that “his girlfriend stabbed him in the arm,” a Youngstown police report states.

Officers tried to obtain the weapon used in the incident, but the man would not allow officers inside the apartment, the report states. Ambulance personnel treated the man at the scene. There were no new charges on file in Youngstown Municipal Court Monday under the woman’s name.

Police took her to the Mahoning County jail. But jail records show that she was released from the jail Monday after being booked Sunday.

PRISON STABBING

An officer was called to the Hubbard Road prison at 10:20 a.m. for an “inmate vs. inmate stabbing” and was advised that three inmates were involved in a verbal argument in a hallway with a closed door between them.

But “jail control staff opened the door, opening the individuals’ access to one another. A physical fight immediately ensued,” the report states.

One of the three men “produced a makeshift weapon and stabbed (the victim) multiple times in the upper back” while a second inmate “struck (the victim) repeatedly with closed-fist punches,” the report states.

“Jail staff quickly intervened and separated the parties,” and the victim was taken for medical care in the prison and later taken to the hospital. The two inmates involved were placed on lockdown. Jail staff were unable to recover the weapon, the report notes.

At the hospital, the officer learned that the inmate was in stable condition with three small puncture holes in his upper back that were consistent with the size and shape of a screwdriver, the report states.
