Three plead guilty to drug-possession charges

YOUNGSTOWN — Three people who were set for trial Monday in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court instead pleaded guilty to various charges and will be sentenced later.

Kyronn J. Copeland, 34, of Republic Avenue, entered guilty pleas on March 26, while Luis P. Rodriguez-Ruiz, 40, of West Chalmers Avenue, and Josey Vargas, 41, of Kendall Avenue in Campbell, pleaded guilty Monday.

Copeland faced a first-degree felony cocaine-possession charge and other charges, but pleaded guilty to three lower-level felony drug charges. Prosecutors are recommending to Judge John Durkin that Copeland get four years in prison.

Rodriguez-Ruiz also faced a first-degree felony cocaine possession charge and other charges, but pleaded guilty to three lower-level felony drug charges and got a prosecutor recommendation for a six-year prison sentence.

Vargas, 41, also faced a first-degree felony cocaine possession charge and other charges, but pleaded guilty to the same three lower-level felony drug charges and got a prosecutor recommendation for six years in prison.

Durkin can deviate from the recommended sentences. Rodriguez-Ruiz and Vargas are set for sentencing April 28. No sentencing date was available Wednesday for Copeland. All three defendants were secretly indicted May 16, 2024, according to court documents.

If the defendants would have been convicted of the first-degree felony charge each one faced, each one could have gotten about 11 years in prison. The charges were filed against each defendant by the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office.

Starting at $3.23/week.
