Crews respond to Liberty fire

LIBERTY — Some residents were displaced after a fire ripped through a multi-residential house in the 4600 block of Middle Road Monday morning.

According to fire Chief Doug Theobald, it took nearly four minutes for a crew to get on scene because the department already had a crew out. The fire department started receiving initial calls from dispatch about the fire around 7:51 a.m.

“Dispatch reported (a) working fire; crews en route could see ahead of arrival there was a working fire of a multiplex unit that was already extended from the first floor to the second floor into the attic,” Theobald said.

Theobald said firefighters pulled down all of the ceilings on the building’s second floor to access the fire in the attic, bringing an aerial, an elevated waterway/ladder, to put water on the other areas they couldn’t access.

Theobald said several departments — Fowler, Brookfield and the Eagle Joint Fire District — were called as backup for water sources, as there was no nearby fire hydrant.

“We brought in other mutual aid (Weathersfield, Youngstown Air Base) because there was an extensive amount of overhaul and firefighting,” Theobald said.

Theobald said all residents made it out of the building, but one was transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation. Two dogs were also rescued, he said.

Theobald said the house will “probably be declared a total loss,” and that the state fire marshal is investigating the cause.
