Fundraiser set to help Girard couple who lost home to fire
GIRARD — The Girard community has come together to help a family who lost their home last month in a fire.
A benefit to help Donald Durkin, his girlfriend, Brittany Bullin, and their 9-month-old son, Daniel, will be noon to 3 p.m. Sunday at Margherita’s Grille, 728 N. State St. The event will include a basket raffle and 50/50. There will be a dinner with oven roasted chicken, pasta, roasted potatoes and green beans. Meals are $15 for adults and $7 for children 12 and under. Tickets are available at Margherita’s Grille and Sassy Savings.
Alexis Sigurani, owner of Sassy Savings in Girard, has led an effort to get items for the family. She said monetary donations are being collected at the store for the family.
She said last week, a check for $8,000 was presented to the family from the many donations received.
Siguarni said there already has been many donations of clothing items, hygiene items and baby formula. She said there is a need for size 3 Pampers for Daniel.
Siguarni said the couple has spoken to her and told her how their lives have been turned upside down since the fire.
She said the family lost photos and special baby items that can’t be replaced.
“The family is very appreciative of all the help from the public. They appreciate the support they have received from people they know and the many people they do not know. They have been so overwhelmed since the fire. Their home was totally destroyed,” Siguarni said.
She said the recent check presentation was a start for the family to rebuild their lives.
Siguarni said the family’s cat, Koby, has not been found since the fire. The family has been staying in an AirBnB.
Officials with the Girard Fire Department said the fire is under investigation. The two-story house at 30 W. Second St. near Jones Court was fully engulfed in flames last month when the fire broke out. Witnesses said thick black smoke could be seen and smelled from at least a half mile away. .
Assisting Girard at the fire were crews from McDonald, Liberty, Hubbard, Weathersfield and the Youngstown Air Reserve Station in Vienna.
Sassy Savings and East Side Civics in Youngstown have been collecting donations since the fire. Sigurani said an event like this is when a community can really come together.
Another fundraiser will be noon to 5 p.m. March 29 at East Side Civics, 968 E. Midlothian Blvd in Youngstown. The event will include a 50/50 raffle and a basket raffle. Adults are $15 and kids are $7. Sausage sandwiches are $6.
