Coroner identifies man shot to death on S. Side

YOUNGSTOWN — The Mahoning County Coroner’s Office on Monday released the name of the man shot to death outside of a barber shop on Canfield Road on the South Side on Friday afternoon as Terrance Simms Jr., 24.

The news release states that the coroner’s office was notified by EMT Ambulance at 12:23 p.m. of Simms’ death. He was the victim of a shooting in front of 719 Canfield Road.

An autopsy was conducted at the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office, the release states. The incident remains under investigation by the coroner’s office and Youngstown Police Department.

The Youngstown Police Department also released its initial report on the killing Monday, giving the time of call as 12:04 p.m. and stating that officers responded to the location near Glenwood Avenue and saw a customer of the business, identified in the report as an “involved person,” standing on the front porch of the barber shop.

The person “pointed to the ground” at the victim, the report states. Large sections of the report are blacked out as part of the “investigation.”

But it notes that other officers arrived at the scene, and an officer identified all of the people that were inside the barber shop, calling them “involved persons.”

It appears the part of the narrative that was blacked out contained about five names.

Friday’s homicide was the first one this year and the first one since Nov. 10, which was 130 days, or about four months.

Youngstown spokesman Andy Resnick confirmed that officers were called to the barber shop at 719 Canfield Road at a little after noon for a report of several gunshots and found a man shot to death in the parking lot. Several bullet shell casings were found in a lot close to Glenwood Avenue.

Police are looking for information regarding a light gray Dodge Challenger R/T Scat Pack in connection with the homicide, according to the Youngstown Police Department Facebook page. They ask anyone who recognizes the car or has any information to contact YPD at 330-747-7911.

In 2025, Youngstown had 13 homicides, with the death of Nicole Carbone, 37, as the final homicide of the year. She was found dead Nov. 10 in a vacant lot at Belleview and East Chalmers avenues on the South Side.

The 13 homicides in 2025 was the lowest number since at least 1967, when there were 14, the Youngstown Police Department has said. The city had 20 homicides in 2024.
