Residents escape morning house fire
YOUNGSTOWN — Several residents of a home involved in a 1:10 a.m. house fire at 709 E. Judson Avenue Monday said they had been having trouble with a third-floor ceiling light fixture “throwing” the breaker in the house. They escaped the fire after a child alerted adults to a noise.
A Youngstown Fire Department report estimates that the damage to the house was about $5,000, and the loss to contents was about $1,500. The report lists the “floor of origin” to be the third floor and lists the cause of the fire as “unintentional.”
It says the fire was confined to the “room of origin” and states that the “factors contributing to ignition” were “electrical failure, malfunction, other.”
“Framing” was the first item ignited, the report states. Firefighters extinguished the fire. When they first arrived, they saw smoke and saw that the fire had broken through the “ridge of the roof.” The occupants of the house were outside when firefighters arrived, the report states.
A man in the house said that after the breaker was tripped, he reset it. His child alerted him to the fire after hearing a noise from the third floor, the report states. Fire personnel noted that the “upper right breaker” was “tripped” when they inspected the house after the fire was out. Fire personnel also put tarps on the first and second floors to catch the water that had been applied to put out the fire, the report states.
The residents said they do not have renter’s insurance. The American Red Cross was notified to assist the victims.
