Marshal’s Service IDs man shot by agents

YOUNGSTOWN — The U.S. Marshal’s Service has identified the man who was shot by members of U.S. Marshals Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force at a home in the 200 block of Galluppi Drive in Coitsville on Feb. 5 as John Doyle, 75.

A news release states that Doyle was wanted by the Poland Township Police Department on a failure to comply charge from Nov. 11 filed in Struthers Municipal Court.

According to Struthers Municipal Court documents, city Clerk of Courts Amsi Medina approved a warrant for Doyle’s arrest on the failure to comply charge Dec. 3.

Medina issued that warrant based on a criminal complaint filed Dec. 3 by Struthers Law Director John Zomoida Jr., who is also Struthers Municipal Court prosecutor, that there was probable cause to believe that Doyle committed the felony failure to comply charge filed by Poland Township police officer Talon Antolak.

The criminal complaint states that on Nov. 22, Antolak tried to make a traffic stop on Doyle’s vehicle at the intersection of U.S. Route 224 and Struthers Road. The officer saw an older man operating the vehicle, the document states.

While Doyle was traveling north near Kennedy Road, Antolak activated lights and siren and saw the driver turn around, look at the officer and continue to drive slowly, the complaint states. The vehicle turned left onto Struthers Road at Arrel-Smith Road.

“Another motorist attempted to stop the vehicle by slowing down and bringing the suspect vehicle to a stop, at which time the officer attempted to box in the suspect vehicle,” the complaint states.

“However, the suspect vehicle then turned into the yard at 5581 Struthers Road and drove around the other vehicle and continued on Struthers Road, at which time the officer discontinued the pursuit,” the complaint states.

The officer was able to identify the driver as Doyle, who is the registered owner of the black Chevrolet Impala, the document states. The officer did this through looking at Doyle’s BMV license photograph.

Also in the file for the case is the order for issuance of subpoena filed by Zomoida on Dec. 3 asking Medina to issue a subpoena “for the attendance of (Doyle) at the preliminary hearing and all future hearings until the case is closed.” The subpoena was issued “to a sheriff, bailiff, coroner, clerk of court, constable, marshal, or a deputy of any, by a municipal or township policeman or to any person designated by order of the court … to serve the subpoena upon the person by delivering a copy thereof to him or her, by reading it to him or her in person, or by leaving it at his or her usual place of residence and to file a return thereof with the clerk.”

The failure to comply is a fourth-degree felony, punishable by up to 18 months in prison if convicted.

According to a Feb. 5 news release from Northern Ohio Violent Fugitives Task Force Public Affairs Officer Anne Murphy, during an attempted arrest of a fugitive on Feb. 5, members of the U.S. Marshals Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force were involved in an officer-involved shooting.

Task force members were “looking for a (75-year-old) white man who was wanted by the Poland Police Department for failing to comply with police orders after fleeing from a traffic stop,” the release states. “Members of the task force arrived at the address where the suspect was believed to be living and spoke with other family members in the home. Officers eventually made contact with the suspect, who was in a motorhome that was parked on the property.

“As officers called out to the suspect inside the motorhome, he brandished a firearm and pointed it at officers,” the marshal’s news release stated. “At that time officers fired at the suspect.” Emergency Medical Services personnel were “called to the scene, and members of the task force provided emergency medical care until EMS arrived. The suspect was transported to the hospital and is currently being treated for his injuries,” the release stated.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation, an arm of the Ohio Attorney General’s Office, later stated that it was investigating the shooting.

BCI spokesman Steve Irwin stated that no law enforcement officers were injured. The Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office requested that BCI carry out the investigation, Irwin stated.

Galluppi Drive is north of U.S. Route 422 near Victory Christian Church, northeast of Campbell.

There are no hearings scheduled in Struthers Municipal Court on Doyle’s failure-to-comply case.
