WHAT: City council meeting Monday

PRESENT: Reynald Paolone, John Moliterno, Lily Martuccio, Tod Latell, Wes Steiner, Thomas Grumley, James Clark and Mayor Mark Zuppo

Council:

• Heard from Safety Service Director Mark Ragozine about seeking an H20 Ohio Environmental $70,000 grant for washing stations for street department vehicles to remove salt and debris from underneath. He said there is no local match.

• Heard from Zuppo the city is waiting for architectural designs for the Wellman Theater as plans are to move forward with roof repairs and some demolition work on the alleyway by the theater.

• Heard from fire Chief James Petruzzi that the ambulance service that restarted last summer is self-sufficient with revenue per transport at $400. He said he is working with Auditor Julie Coggins to get a total for the first six months.

• Heard from Latell of a Kids Dental clinic opening the fourth quarter of the year at the former Rite Aid building off U.S. Route 422.

• Gave second reading to enter into a contract with MS Consultants Inc. of Youngstown for engineering services at $105,000 for 2026 and 2027.

• Approved advertising for bids for repairing or replacing a section of the city hall roof that has been leaking.

• Set a finance meeting for 6:30 p.m. Feb. 23 in council chambers, zoning meeting at 5 p.m. Feb. 19 at Girard Free Library followed by a blockwatch at 6 p.m., also at the library, and streets and sidewalks 11 a.m. March 10 at the mayor’s office meeting room.

WHAT: Board of education meeting Jan. 22

PRESENT: Joseph Castor, Vincent Ragozine, Tammy King, Zachary Steiner and Scott Strain

The board:

• Named Steiner as student achievement liaison to the Ohio School Boards Association with Ragozine as alternate.

• Approved the 2026-27 school calendar with the first day for students Aug. 20 and last day May 19, 2027.

• Accepted a $9,397 bus safety grant from the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce.

• Named Lynn Mickey as secretary for the junior high for 10.5 months at $19.17 per hour, replacing Angie Cole, who retired. Mickey had previously served as clerical aide with her last day Jan. 21.

• Approved Janine Bahler as an-needed substitute nurse at $17.50 per hour.
