Driver on I-680 spots residential fire

YOUNGSTOWN — A person driving on Interstate 680 about 7 a.m. Friday saw a man wearing a Carhartt jacket lighting a house on fire on Roy Street on the West Side.

A Youngstown police report states that officers and Youngstown firefighters responded to Roy Street and extinguished the fire on the inside of a vacant house.

They also checked and did not find anyone inside the house, including the suspect, the report states. The scene was handed over to the Youngstown Fire Department Arson Division, the report states.

When a Youngstown police officer arrived at the house, he saw a dark-colored Chevy Impala in front of the house, but it “disappeared before he had a chance to investigate if anyone in the auto was involved” in the incident.

PRISON STABBING

In another weekend incident, police were called to the Northeast Ohio Correctional Center, 2240 Hubbard Road on the East Side, at 8:11 a.m. Saturday for a stabbing.

An officer arrived at the private prison and spoke with a prison administrator, who said an inmate “engaged in an argument with another inmate … and stabbed him in the right hand and right side of the head.

The administrator said the reason for the fight was not known. The victim was being transported to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital for treatment. The suspect in the stabbing was locked down, the administrator said.

The incident was captured on video, and the administrator was making a copy of it for police. The officer said to keep the copy for a detective who will retrieve it.

BAR FIGHT

Also, Alicia Negron, 28, was charged with felony fleeing and eluding (failure to comply with the signal or order of a police officer) early Sunday for an incident that began at the King’s Court bar, 3229 South Avenue, with police going there for a bar check and to assist with a very large crowd.

As officers began to approach a fight, they saw a Jeep Liberty driving erratically, striking two cars in the parking lot.

An officer working outside of the bar tried to make the driver stop, but was not successful, the report states. Officers then activated lights and siren to make a traffic stop, but the driver went around the cruiser, nearly hitting pedestrians and began to flee north on South Avenue. The vehicle turned onto Philadelphia Avenue and then stopped with the driver, Negron, getting out of the car and walking toward officers and screaming and fighting with officers, the report states.

After she was handcuffed, she continued to fight with officers and tried to avoid being placed in a cruiser. Once inside the cruiser, she kicked the rear driver window, leaving scuffs and dents in the door. She was removed from the vehicle.

A passenger in the car gave a statement, describing Negron as having argued with people in the lot of the bar, hit cars and drove off, then “put the car in park and started trying to fight cops.”

Negron was taken to the Mahoning County jail.

She was arraigned Monday on the failure to comply charge, a third-degree felony, in Youngstown Municipal Court. She also was charged with misdemeanor obstructing official business. If she is convicted, she could get about three years in prison.

She also had warrants through the Youngstown Police Department, according to the report. Information on one of the vehicles that was struck was obtained by police. The driver of the other car left the parking lot before police could speak to them.

Starting at $3.23/week.
