District seeks grant for sewer work
BOARDMAN — A local contractor will make repairs to a storm sewer system, and the ABC Water and Stormwater District will seek state funds to pay for it.
At a meeting of the ABC district on Wednesday at the Boardman Township Government Center, the board approved two resolutions, most notably a motion to apply for a roughly $580,000 grant through the Ohio Water Development Authority’s Water Pollution Control Loan Fund.
Board members — Austintown Trustee Robert Santos, Canfield Township Administrator Keith Rogers and Boardman Township Administrator Jason Loree — approved the motion unanimously.
Marilyn Sferra Kenner, an administrator with ABC and former road superintendent for Boardman, said the district has used the grant program on a handful of occasions previously.
During her time with the township, Kenner collaborated with ABC on several flood-mitigation efforts. Last year, she said Boardman needs to line a deep storm sewer on Pierce Drive to offset the damage from voids in the pipe joints.
The resulting leaks have caused large holes in residents’ yards. Those have been temporarily filled with dirt and rocks, but they will continue to wash out and grow unless a liner is run through the interior of the pipe to keep water flowing through without leaking.
The project will address the issue along Pierce and part of Flagler Lane.
“The problems there are very deep so it just made more sense to have a contractor handle it, and for that we need to apply for a grant to cover that cost,” Kenner said. Lowellville-based S.E.T Inc. put in the low bid, and was awarded the project.
Kenner said the work will begin in late March or early April and should only take about 45 days to complete.
The water district board also approved the general reimbursement agreement between ABC and Canfield Township, with Loree and Santos both voting yes and Rogers abstaining.
