Canfield Twp. staggers its zoning terms

CANFIELD TOWNSHIP — With a light agenda, trustees took necessary steps at this week’s meeting to help stagger terms on the Zoning Board of Appeals and the Zoning Commission. To accomplish the goal, prior motions had to be rescinded.

First was rescinding the motion to appoint Adrian Amedia to a five-year term on the Zoning Board of Appeals, running from Jan. 1, 2026, to Dec. 31, 2030. The new replacement motion ends Amedia’s term on Dec. 31, 2027.

The second set of motions involved Bill Wilkeson’s seat on the Zoning Board of Appeals, originally set for the similar five-year term ending Dec. 31, 2030. The new ending for Wilkeson’s term was set for Dec. 31, 2029.

On the Zoning Commission, the reappointment of Andrew Resnick and Anthony Russo to five-year terms running from Jan. 1, 2024, through Dec. 31, 2029, was rescinded. The new motion has Resnick’s term running from Jan. 1, 2024 to Dec. 31, 2028.

“Mr. Russo was not included as he has since resigned,” said trustee Marie Cartwright.

She said the new terms of office will stagger the appointments on both boards so all members would not have terms expiring at the same time.

HALL CLOSED AFTER SNOWSTORM

Trustees also discussed the closing of Canfield Township Hall on Monday.

“The question is whether to pay employees,” trustees Chairman Joe Paloski said. “We shut the office due to safety issues.”

Cartwright said the employees did not take off Monday, but they were told not to come in.

“We are the ones who closed it; therefore the employees should be paid,” she said.

Trustees voted unanimously to approve paying employees for Monday.

In other business, trustees voted to advertise for the 2026 OPWC (Ohio Public Works Commission) paving program for Fairfax, Barrington, Orchard Park, Parkview, Stonegate, Grayson, Rutherford and Timber Run drives, and Chidester Drive, Ivy Lane, Maplevale Drive and the Leffingwell stub. Bids for the project will be accepted until Feb. 24 at 2 p.m. The program is the first year on a five-year paving plan submitted by Public Works Foreman Bob Burkett.

“A lot depends on the sales tax passing and how much the township receives,” Burkett said.

The 2027 estimated project includes Fox Haven Drive, Victory Lane, Paddock Circle, Winners Circle, Stutz Drive, Seville Drive and Mercedes Place.

For 2028, the plan includes Fairway, Barber, St. Andrews and Catawba drives. For 2029, the list includes Nicolina Way, Pleasant Valley Lane, Lydia Lane, Starr Centre Drive and Gibson Road. Year 2030 includes Westford Drive, Westford Place and Kyle Ridge.

“All these projected roads are subject to the sales tax and the price of paving,” Burkett said. “Should we have the ability to add a street if prices allow, I would suggest choosing streets from 2029’s list, which are single streets. In the other years, I tried to group streets in a development to save money.”

He said the price would be cheaper if the streets are close together. He did add that the five-year plan is just a projected plan and is subject to change.

SCHOLARSHIP APPLICANT

Attending the Tuesday meeting was South Range High School senior Solena DeJesus and her mother, Heather DeJesus. Solena is applying for an Ohio Township Association scholarship, which requires applicants to attend a township meeting.

“I plan on attending Denison University in Columbus,” Solena said. “I am going to major in communications and Spanish.”

Trustees signed off on an OTA form, fulfilling that requirement.

Trustee Brian Governor announced the township will be making a move from the domain Canfield.org to Canfield.gov. He said the township got a grant to make the move and will be setting a date to switch emails.

Those who communicate regularly with the township will be notified prior to the switch.

Starting at $3.23/week.
