BOE in Poland kicks off new year

Poland School District CFO / Treasurer Jeanette Medina administers the oath of office to new school board member Erin Memo during Wednesday’s organizational meeting.

POLAND — In a relatively short Poland Board of Education meeting this week, new members were sworn in and necessary authorizations were passed for 2026.

The meeting opened with Erin Memo being sworn in by CFO / Treasurer Jeanette Medina, followed by Troy Polis taking the oath from attorney Matthew Giannini.

After the oaths, the board elected Polis board president for 2026. Elected to vice president was board member Larry Warren.

The freshly seated board then approved a meeting schedule for the year. The board is moving to one meeting per month as opposed to work sessions then business meetings each month as was done last year.

“That means we will be discussing an issue and possibly be voting on it at the same meeting,” said former board president Gregg Riddle.

The schedule will be posted on the district’s website.

The board then approved 28 agenda items under one vote as annual routine items. Among some of the notable agenda items was membership in the Ohio School Boards Association. Medina said it is the 71st year that Poland has belonged to the OSBA. She said the annual fee has risen to $6,042 from approximately $5,000 in the past.

The board also approved $250 to the OSBA’s Legal Assistance Fund to support the efforts of other boards of education to obtain favorable judicial decisions.

Another item Medina pointed out was the petty cash fund of $3,500 for the athletic department. She said the Board of Education used to have a petty cash / change fund, but it was no longer needed.

The meeting closed with committee appointments. Riddle will serve as legislative liaison with the OSBA, Memo will serve as impartial hearing officer, Larry Warren will be the board’s representative to the Poland Schools Foundation, Jeff Sabrin will serve as student achievement liaison with the OSBA, and Polis will round out the appointments as liaison to the Evaluation Review Committee.

Starting at $3.23/week.
