Incumbents keep seats in Canfield Township
CANFIELD TOWNSHIP — Voters had two seats to fill and a choice of three candidates. They made their voices heard and selected incumbents Marie Cartwright and Brian Governor.
Cartwright received 34% of the vote and Governor received 40%, according to complete and unofficial results from the Mahoning County Board of Elections. Emilio Sebastiani brought in 26% of the vote.
“I will continue working daily to represent, assist and respond to residents with their concerns, questions and needs,” Governor said. “I’ll make township government work for the residents.”
For Cartwright, the victory represented a continuation of her dedication to the township.
“I’m truly honored that the community continues to place its trust in me to serve as township trustee,” she said. “We’ve accomplished so much together since 2010 and I’m excited to keep building on that progress. My focus remains on ensuring that the Township remains a Township, transparency, fiscal responsibility, and keeping our Township a great place to live, work and raise a family.”
Both Cartwright and Governor said they would continue to work at getting water and sewer to the northwest section of the township.
“Getting the waterlines in place is only part of the plan since it will be necessary to add a water tower which will be located on township owned property, and will require further funding,” Cartwright said. “So, much time, energy and resources will be needed to accomplish this goal.”
She added that the current Board of Trustees has implemented an aggressive street paving program that both she and Governor hope to continue.
Both Governor and Cartwright may also have to deal with a potential problem next year should the property tax proposal go on the ballot.
“Currently, township revenue streams include local property taxes, gasoline and motor vehicle license taxes, and the state-administered local government fund,” Cartwright said. “According to the Ohio Township Association, townships collect less than 6% of local property taxes in Ohio. Despite these financial constraints, the township remains in a strong fiscal position and is prepared to make necessary adjustments to continue providing essential services. If needed, some services may be temporarily limited to maintain financial stability, but the overall outlook remains positive.”
Cartwright has served as Canfield trustee since 2009, being re-elected in 2013, 2017, 2021 and this year.
Governor has been a Canfield trustee since 2014 and this year makes his third re-election.
