Hubbard resident voices concerns over zoning code
HUBBARD TOWNSHIP — One resident presented concerns about potential issues with the age of the township’s zoning code and its accessibility.
James Gates, a disabled veteran, explained to officials at Tuesday’s regular meeting that he placed a shed in the front left yard of his property out of convenience, noting that it was 113 feet from the road and 30 feet from the property line.
“I got a violation that says I’m not allowed to have my shed there; it doesn’t provide health issues or safety issues or nothing,” Gates said. “I want to know why, in your guys’s rules, I can’t have it there.”
Trustee Jason Tedrow said the rules were passed some time ago by the township’s previous boards, adding that he didn’t disagree with Gates’s issue and disliked the idea of a homeowner’s association.
“It does get a little difficult because you’re trying to prevent the worst-case scenario, and it’s one of those things where one person spoils things for everybody,” Tedrow said. “I think there’s a potential that we could probably relook at some of those things.”
Tedrow recalled a situation involving several lots, where a resident wanted to put a shed on one and technically, the township’s rules didn’t let them do it.
Tedrow said the hardest part of the process was getting people involved, adding that some cases start in the township’s zoning commission and get kicked out to the trustees.
Gates asked trustees if they had read the zoning rules for the township and questioned why they mirrored the city of Hubbard, adding that the township’s zoning department told him that.
Tedrow said the township’s code belonged to the township and Trustee Monica Baker said the Hubbard Public Library has a copy of the township’s zoning code.
Gates questioned how the township residents were supposed to know, as officials don’t communicate through the township’s website.
